How to make the most out of your business trip

Sarah and I have both traveled a lot for business and we are not talking about our Wander-Lust press trips. We are talking about the many business trips we’ve made before we started our travel platform. One week we would land in Berlin, the other week in Paris, Hong Kong or even Los Angeles. Endless meetings that can go on for hours, staring at a whiteboard? Maybe, but a business trip has a lot of perks you can take advantages of, if you play it right. How to make the most out of a business trip? Read on!

1. Stick with the same airline
Why? Well, for the simple reason that you will save loads of miles and with those miles you can get discounts, you can use on all your travels. Frequent flyer programs are awesome if you fly very often. Before you know it, you have thousands of points that can buy you a free ticket to your favorite holiday destination.

2. Use your credit card wisely
If you use any card during business trips, it should definitely be your credit card. This way you save points and get loads of advantages, If you pick the right one of course. The American Express Card for example, you are saving points with all your expenditures. These points can be exchanged for all sorts of things such as discount at concerts, hotels and gifts. The card also gives you standard extra’s at selected top restaurants (such as complementary aperitifs or a bottle of wine). Cards like these can provide you with a richer life without having to do much because you are using your card anyway.

business trip tips

3. Ditch the taxi and walk
If you can, walk. In a city like Amsterdam, Barcelona, Paris, Berlin and even London, you can easily walk from one place to another if you are situated in the city center. You will find that your office is often located around this area plus your hotel is never far away. By walking you will see the city, enjoy the smell of another country and get your body working. Something you won’t experience by sitting in a taxi.

How to make the most out of your business trip
You might as well walk..

Try to convince your business partners to eat somewhere else

4. Extent your stay
We’ve done this many times. It’s perfect if a business trip starts on a Wednesday and ends of Friday. If you ask nicely, you can even let your boss pay for the flight back if it would cost the same as returning on a workday.

5. Have dinner somewhere you haven’t been before
Business trips go hand in hand with dinners. Too often, you will eat at the same places. Try to convince your business partners to eat somewhere else and surprise their taste buds! Get inspired on Instagram or food blogs. Did you know that when you own an American Express Card, you can enjoy free bottles of wine or aperitifs at 600 restaurants worldwide? That’s worth looking into!

How to make the most out of a business trip
When we get the chance, we always stay in a boutique hotel

6. Try to stay in a boutique hotel
Hotels are such an important part of a business trip. Is the bed good? Is it located in a nice area? Our advice is to go for a boutique hotel instead of a large corporate hotel. You will find, that the service will be more personal, plus it will feel less of a business trip and can even feel like home.

7. Get up early (even if you are not a morning person)
A difficult task, we know. But if you are there, you might as well get up early, and go outside to explore a little bit. Maybe have a croissant at a Parisian bakery or a traditional espresso in Italy. It’s always better than the standard hotel breakfast right?

There you have it, 7 tips to make the most out of a business trip. When is your next one due?

Love,

Elke

Where to stay during Amsterdam Dance Event

Amsterdam is famous for a lot of things but when it comes to dance music, it’s ADE. Amsterdam Dance Event. More than 300.000 people visited Amsterdam last October to dance their butts of to the biggest names in the dance and techno scene. A large amount of  people need a place to stay so the hotel and Airbnb business is booming during this time. So where to stay? Well, these are some contenders that might come in handy during the best nights of your life;

The Student Hotel (East & West)
Young professionals, globetrotters and students love staying at this hotel. Prices are very reasonable and they now have 2 locations in Amsterdam. Enjoy events, meet ups, and work dates. If you want to stay a bit longer, there is a community kitchen available and you can get a bicycle to explore the city. Double rooms are around €100 per night. www.thestudenthotel.com

City Hub Amsterdam (West)
This is a great self service accommodation if you’re out all night and busy exploring Amsterdam all day. Instead of dorms or hotel rooms, you sleep in a private cabin. These fit up to 2 people. Each Hub has a giant, double bed, wifi, app-controlled lighting and a personal audio streaming system. Pretty cool.
There are a total of 50 cabins and you share the toilets and showers. expect to pay a little more around Amsterdam Dance Event but rooms normally go for about 60 euro per night. www.cityhub.com

Conscious Hotels (Vondelpark)
Right behind the Vondelpark and access to the lunch/dinner district of Amsterdam’s De Overtoom, you have a perfect location with trams stopping near the hotel. This hotel is extra special because they are one of the most sustainable hotels in Amsterdam. Enjoy a organic breakfast to get you back on your feet after a wild night. Rooms go for €130 per night at the moment. www.conscioushotels.com

Generator Hostel (East)
I’ve actually stayed in this brand new poshtel when it first opened. I really loved it because although it’s a hostel, you feel really at easy and it doesn’t get any cleaner and hip than at Generator. Each room features air conditioning, bed linen and a private bathroom with shower. You can share rooms or choose a premium room for 2. The hostel is situated right next to the Oosterpark and you will be in vibrant area “De Pijp” in no time. Prices do go up during Amsterdam Dance Event so get your friends together and start sharing! Gernerator/Amsterdam

Generator poshtel Amsterdam

Teleport Hotel (New West)
This hotel used to be an office and has been open since this summer. It’s used by party seekers all over the world as the Sloterdijk train Station is just around the corner and even though you’re not in the city center, it’s pretty easy to get to. They organize free tours through Amsterdam and Schiphol Airport is only 2 train stops away. They are planning an event in November where they invite several graffiti artist to pimp the rooms as they still look a bit boring due to the office look. www.teleporthotel.nl

Volkshotel (East)
Love, love, love this hotel. It’s a place where people come together and clever visual references to the building’s history as a newspaper office occur throughout (newsprint wallpaper, archive photographs of Amsterdam’s rebellious counterculture). Double rooms could go for as little at €69,- and you’re in the city center before you know it. Book it here

Hotel Not Hotel (Old West)
If you’re looking for something special, you will find it here. The name already gives a slight hint because it’s a hotel, but not really.. The concept is pretty cool. No room is the same and they are designed by different artist. Some rooms are hidden behind bookshelves, others look like a Mexican house or you can sleep in an old tram. Some rooms literally only have a bed in them but the beds and mattresses are luxurious and will have you sleep like a baby. The hotel is in west Amsterdam and parallel to the up and coming Kinkerstraat. Local Club “Het Sieraad” will host a few good parties during the Amsterdam Dance Event. There are only a few rooms so be quick if you want to be lucky. Hotel Not Hotel

You have many options of which you can choose from and all apartments have a kitchen and private bathrooms. There are 3 locations of which one is near the Central Station. Check it out! www.yays.com

Yays is great for getting the local experience

Sustainable hotels in Amsterdam

These are the most sustainable hotels in Amsterdam

Travelers are becoming more aware about the way they travel. People nowadays want to know where their food comes from, where their clothes are made and contribute in helping the planet. The travel industry is playing into this and I’m happy to see more and more of this. Amsterdam is extremely innovative when it comes to going greener and there are a few hotels that stand out. These are the most sustainable hotels in Amsterdam:

Conscious Hotel
Conscious hotels has been around for a few years and was one of the first hotels to set the bar when it comes to sustainability. The founders of Conscious felt it was time to change something when they had their first child. The future wasn’t looking so great for mother nature so they decided to do something. With 2 hotels and a third one on the way set for 2017 (westergasterrein), this Green Key Gold certified hotel is going to extreme lengths in order to help the planet. How? They use led lights, no cash policy, the tables in your room are made from recycled coffee cup holders and the energy they use to power the hotel comes from renewable sources. Everything has pretty much been designed to be kind to the planet. Saying this, it’s also got a hip, contemporary feel to it. Book you room here and find out.

Just opened in Amsterdam’s business district, Element has made a brand-wide commitment for all Element Hotels to operate to sustainable and green practices. They do this by using a lot of eco-friendly materials in their hotels and recycling their trash. Every room has a trash can with a divider for paper, plastic and other waste. They use carpet that is made from 100% recycled content and low VOS paints on the walls. The wall art is even mounted from a base made of recycled tires. They use the 80/20% food rule meaning 80% vegetables and 20% meat and fish. You can borrow bicycles at the hotel instead of calling an Uber everywhere. This is also a great way to see Amsterdam. The hotel is designed to function a long stay hotel. People who come over for business and need a relaxing bright place, will love it here. Book your stay here!

Not open yet but this hotel is set to be the most sustainable hotel in Amsterdam and Europe! They are expecting the first guest this summer. They describe themselves as “the Tesla of the hotel industry”. The hotel will be situated in Amsterdam East and will have 300 rooms. They are concentrating on using bio waste to use this as soil for the plants where they will grow their own vegetables. They are also experimenting with vertical farming which means they will use layers of gardens on top of each other for optimal use of space. Oh, how we love these Tripadvisor lists that they give us on a yearly basis.
This time, they have asked their loyal “travelers” to vote for the best hotels in The Netherlands when it comes to service. This must have been a difficult task as The Netherlands has so many amazing hotels on offer. They did managed to narrow it down to a top 25 and this is the top 5 result:

1. The Toren, Amsterdam
Apart from the amazing decor and ambiance, this hotel scores extremely high on service.
When you arrive you might be asked if you are staying for a special occasion and if so, they will pamper you!

Breakfast is always included and the rooms are simple but elegant. And of course, they score high on service!
