24 Oct 6X CHEESE FONDUE IN AMSTERDAM
Cheese fondue isn’t something you can only find in the French Alpes nowadays. No, other European cities have adapted this winter food. Amsterdam is one of those places, and even has cheese fondue restaurants. We made a selecting where you can find the best.
Cheese Fondue in Amsterdam
So what is so special about cheese fondue, and how do you eat it? We must admit, we are not crazy about all cheeses served (some you love, some you…well, dislike) But cheese fondue is also something you can learn to eat. Like sushi, beer or coffee. Amsterdam has picked up the trend, and more and more restaurants are adding the cheesy dish to their menu. Let’s have a look at the best ones.
Smelt, Westerpark
Smelt is once again serving its classics during the dark winter months, such as the Swiss fondue consisting beautiful mountain cheeses. But also the Dutch homegrown cheeses such as Le Petit Doruvael and Twente Bunkerkaas. New this year is the Italian fondue made from Provolone Piccante, Parmigiano Reggiano, Fontina and Taleggio. All fondues are served with crusty sourdough bread from Fort Nine (famous for the best pastries) and fresh steamed seasonal vegetables.
Smelt originated as a collaboration between Café De Doffer and De Kaaskamer van Amsterdam. Located in a former coffee roastery in Westerpark, Smelt Westerpark is the second Smelt establishment in Amsterdam.
Café Bern, Nieuwmarkt 9
They call the cheese fondue here legendary, so that’s enough reason to try it. This old café on the Nieuwemarkt has been around for years, and it hasn’t changed much. For their fondue you pay €21,50.
Fondue & Fondue, Overtoom 415
This restaurant near Vondelpark is family owned and was one of the first cheese fondue restaurants in Amsterdam. From €19,- you can pick between Dutch, Fish, meat or truffle cheese fondue. End the evening with chocolate fondue and you can’t hear the word anymore!
‘t Blauwhoofd, Hendrik Jonkerplein
With good reviews, this restaurant has managed to stay around for at least 30 years. This fondue restaurant in Amsterdam, offers more than just cheese and dips, but it’s the fondue that has been praised the most. ‘t Blauwhoofd is located in the middle of Amsterdam’s city center, so book a table to avoid disappointment.
Van Wees, Herengracht 319
One of the more expensive cheese fondue’s in this list, but oh so good. For 24,50, you are served a 4-cheese fondue with unlimited bread and raw veggies, yummie!
Het Karbeel, Warmoesstraat 16
The building that houses the restaurant dates back to the year 1534. The Karbeel gets its name from the carbels on the ceiling. A carbelen is the sloping beam that connects wall to truss beam. It’s one of the most authentic cheese fondue restaurants in Amsterdam.
