BELLEVILLE VALLEY | SUMMER IN THE FRENCH ALPS

When most people think of the Belleville Valley, they imagine snow-covered slopes, world-class skiing, and cozy winter chalets. Resorts like Val Thorens, Les Menuires, and Saint-Martin de Belleville have made this area world-famous for its winter sports. However, there’s a whole other side to this alpine paradise that many overlook—the serene and breathtaking beauty of summer.

Getting There: A Relaxing Journey

Our adventure began with a journey that was almost as enjoyable as the destination itself. While you could drive to the Belleville Valley in about 12 hours, we opted for the comfort and ease of train travel (8 hours). We took the Eurostar from Amsterdam to Paris du Nord, a seamless transition via metro to Paris Gare de Lyon, and then hopped on the TGV to Chambéry Challes les Eaux. The TGV was a dream—free Wi-Fi, charging points, and spotless facilities made the ride so comfortable. Our final leg was a scenic train ride from Chambéry to Moutiers, where we were greeted by the towering peaks of the Alps. Once we arrived, it was just a short ride to the cozy village of Saint-Martin de Belleville.

Where to Stay: A Charming Alpine Retreat

Saint-Martin de Belleville was our base, and what a delightful place it was! This picturesque village embodies alpine charm, with flower-decked houses and a cute town square featuring a bubbling fountain. The Lodgi Hotel, our home for the trip, was an absolute gem. Waking up to views of the valley every morning was a treat, and the hotel’s wellness facilities were the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration. The jacuzzi, with its panoramic views of the mountains, became a favorite spot, and we even tried the yoga class on the terrace. Both the higher-altitude Val Thorens and villages deeper in the valley can be reached in about 20 to 30 minutes by car, making Saint-Martin a convenient and accessible base.

What to Do: Adventures Beyond the Slopes

Summer in the Belleville Valley is all about outdoor adventure, and there’s no shortage of activities to fill your days. Below is a selection of what we experienced, but there’s so much more to explore! However, let’s take you into our to-do’s:

Hiking to Le Lac Blanc

Embark on a hike from Val Thorens to Le Lac Blanc, a stunning turquoise lake nestled in a moon-like landscape at the foot of the Peclet Glacier. The 3-hour trek was challenging yet rewarding, with each step bringing us closer to the surreal beauty of the high alpine terrain. Along the way, you’ll find breathtaking viewpoints and plenty of opportunities to spot marmots!

Exploring La Vallée de Deux Nants

A 30-minute drive took us to this hidden gem of a valley, where we lunched at the Refuge de Deux Nants. The restaurant, known for its fresh and locally sourced menu, was the perfect stop before continuing a hike trail. This valley, with its tiny, picturesque village, is a place where time seems to stand still. Just up to road you have a breathtaking view on the Vallee de Deux Nants with its dramatic high, green cliffs.

Visiting the Mountain Farm at Les Combes

Combining our visit to the Deux Nants Valley, we hiked up to a traditional mountain farm in Les Combes. The 35-minute walk was well worth it when we were greeted by a local cheesemaker eager to share his craft. We tasted fresh cheeses while learning about the farm’s history and its place in the valley’s culture. A truly authentic experience, and I also should not forget to mention the view! The panoramic vistas of the valley were absolutely breathtaking.

Indulging in Wellness

After days filled with adventure, a bit of pampering was in order. We headed to La Bouitte, a Michelin-starred gem that offers not only exquisite brunches but also a serene spa experience. This place radiates authenticity, and relaxing in such a setting was the perfect way to unwind. We indulged in a fantastic brunch featuring oysters, freshly baked tarts, cheeses, and the most delicious bread. The hotel itself feels like a grand, welcoming home with its charming pottery and solid wooden details everywhere. Would highly recommend for spending a day or even booking a stay!

Trying Adrenaline Sports

We didn’t experience this ourselves, but we heard incredible stories about it throughout our trip. For those seeking more adrenaline, the Belleville Valley has a range of mountain sports beyond hiking. Glacier climbing, in particular, offers an exhilarating way to immerse yourself in the raw, rugged beauty of the Alps.

Dining at Chez Pépé Nicolas

No visit to the valley would be complete without a dinner at this beloved farm-to-table restaurant. Surrounded by land where cows, goats, chickens, herbs, vegetables, and more thrive, the restaurant strives to use as many ingredients as possible from its own grounds—from the milk to the cooking herbs. The views from the restaurant are fantastic, and the food is exceptionally delicious. Every Wednesday, they host a spectacular fireworks show that draws both locals and visitors. We joined the crowd on a grassy hill, marveling at the display lighting up the night sky—a magical ending to our day.
