16 Apr 16X BEST TERRACES WITH KIDS IN THE NETHERLANDS
If you have children and the sun is out, you want to sit on an outside terrace somewhere where kids can play safely, so you can relax. We’ve selected 16 of the best terraces with kids in the Netherlands.
Family friendly terraces in the Netherlands
Honestly, it’s not easy to find a terrace in the Netherlands that has it all. As a parent you want to relax, but in all fairness, you can only do this knowing your kids are happy and safe. If they are happy, it means more relaxation for parents and grandparents. Well, kids won’t get bored at these terraces!
Here are some key elements that make a terrace family-friendly:
- Play Area – A playground, sandbox, or climbing structure keeps kids entertained.
- Safe Envrioment – for example a large grass field, car-free, and not near open water.
- Fun Extras – Features like water play areas (e.g., spray parks), trampolines, or bouncy castles add to the fun.
- Kids Entertainment – Organized children events like puppet shows, craft tables, or jumpy castles are a big plus.
- Kid-Friendly Menu – Simple, tasty, and healthy options, plus snacks and treats!
Charlie, Schaijk
This family restaurant features a large, smoke-free terrace by the water. Kids can have a blast in the indoor play forest, go fun bowling, enjoy the outdoor Spray Park, or explore the wooden outdoor play forest for endless fun. Open for lunch, dinner, or drinks, with a special kids’ menu! restaurantcharlie.nl
De Vondeltuin, Amsterdam
This spot has been around for a while, but the cozy terrace near the southern entrance of Vondelpark remains a top location. Cargo bikes line up along the fence because this is a favorite terrace for families. Right next to the large terrace, there’s a playground with a climbing frame and a sandbox. Enjoy great food, fair-trade coffee, beer, wine, honey from their own beehives, and ice cream in the summer!

Timboektoe, Wijk aan Zee
There are several factors that make this beachfront terrace extra special. First of all, parking is free in Wijk aan Zee – a rarity, making it a popular spot. Surfers, families, friends, and couples come here to enjoy the wide beach, as well as the cozy terrace of Timboektoe. Children can play freely in the sand, giving parents a moment of peace. And the best part about Timboektoe? The large lounge sofas, spacious enough for six people. If they are full, try your luck at Aloha next door.

Het Duincafé, Overveen
Not far from Bloemendaal aan Zee, you’ll find Het Duincafé – a well-known spot in Overveen and the surrounding area. There’s plenty of parking, but if you come by bicycle, you’ll ride through the stunning landscape of the Kennemerduinen. Be sure to bring your kids or grandkids, because you can enjoy a relaxing coffee while they play with the water pump, sand, or climbing frame.
Bonus: Inside, there’s a visitor center all about the dune area, complete with a small shop, fun for all ages!
Kraantje Lek, Overveen
Again in Overveen, but one of our favorite family friendly terraces throughout the year. They offer pancakes, lunch, snacks and great oat-cappuccino (for those who want to know). During the rainy season you can sit underneath the covers, or inside. But kids can play in the sand, with water, or one of the wooden play structures. One downside, when it’s August/September, there could be some interference by wasps.
De Kas van Kaat, Zwolle
This place is a bunch of things all together. A studio, wood workshop, bakery, garden, kitchen & lunch café. What makes it a great terrace with kids? There is plenty of space, a large garden, and some toys.
Pllek, Amsterdam
Word has it that they will close their doors due to building plans for apartments, but for now, they are here to stay! What we love about this kids friendly terrace, is that they have sand, and many kids activities. Be aware that there is water at the dock, so keep an eye out for the little ones.
De Volière, Noordwijkerhout
Say hello to this relatively new hotspot which opened in 2024. De Volière is your all-day go-to for a cozy breakfast, laid-back lunch, delicious dinner or a cheerful afternoon drink. This stylish spot is located right by the Oosterduinse Plas, with a spacious terrace and oh-so-comfy chairs that catch plenty of sunshine.
The perfect place to unwind by the water. Want to know more or book your table? Head over to devoliere.nl.
Moeke, Den Bosch
What makes Moeke’s terrace in Den Bosch extra special is the playful addition of a kids’ play area. This makes it not just a favorite hangout for adults, but also a top spot for families. While the grown-ups relax with a drink and a bite, the little ones can run wild of a grass field and enjoy themselves on the playground. Win-win, right? moeke.nl/denbosch
Jungle Café, Eindhoven
Surprisingly, this hotspot isn’t located in Eindhoven’s most trendy area, but in the middle of a neighborhood. They serve great coffee, matcha and beetroot latte’s, but also healthy lunch on pretty plates. It’s a favorite for parents, as they have an indoor play area and a kids corner outside. Although the outside terrace is not big, but wonderful to sit at if you get a spot.
Nieuw Westert, Binnen Egmond
This is such a place that adults love to go for a drink and food. Good beers on tap, cocktails, and Dutch snacks. If you happen to have kids, bring them along! There is a large nature playground where they can play. This place is loved by young and old! nieuwwestert.nl

Parking is free nearby. pannenkoekenparadijs.nl
