6 x NEW AMAZING ASIAN RESTAURANTS IN AMSTERDAM

We have a weakness for Asian destinations and Asian food. It may have something to do with the fact that I have Indonesian roots and growing up with eating various spices and herbs. This always results in sheer joy when I hear about a new Asian restaurant opening in Amsterdam. These are some newcomers we want you to hear about.

Intisari Bistro Indonesia, Balboastraat 24

If you know the Dutch, you know that Indonesian food has always been important. Most people know their way around with GadoGado, Saté and Nasi Goreng. We’re happy to mention that Intisari Bistro Indonesia recently opened its doors and the reviews are praising positively. www.intisari.nl

Asian Newcomers in Amsterdam

BAOHUIS,Van Limburg stirumstraat 115

This Asian street food newcomer has opened as of early summer and is partly run by renowned chef Justin Brown. The serve no nonsense bao buns (with pulled pork or veggie), cocktails, finger licking Asian bites and Asian beers! They are close by the Westerpark, and have an outside terrace with plenty of seats. baohuis.nl

Benji’s Toko & Benji’s Bro, Baarsjesweg 188 / Maassluitstraat 243

After the success at Benji’s East, they quickly made plans to open a second café. This time, with Indonesian flavours. During breakfast and lunch you can enjoy healthy Bali style dishes such as Buddha or Acai bowls, but at dinner the real Indonesian flavours come out. You can order a mini “rijstafel” for meat, fish eaters or vegetarians. In addition to these, there are also Indonesian side orders are available. The toko is a place where you can drink Bali style cocktails at night and cool events with DJ’s will follow. The interior is amazing and the staff is friendly. Benji’s is not wasting any time and opened their 3rd location in Amsterdam New West, Benji’s Bro, which will also become a co-working space. In conclusion, you will see us here often!

Beji's Toko | Asian Newcomers

Boi Boi Southwest, Heemstedestraat 27H

Some say that Boi Boi is the best Thai restaurant in Amsterdam. They established back in 2015, but recently opened a new place near Hoofddorpplein in Amsterdam New West. To begin with, they serve the best Thai dishes we love to eat in Thailand. We can’t wait to try it! www.boiboi.com

Koma House, Krugerplein 2

This small Vietnamese restaurant has been getting amazing reviews by many customers, as well as from Asian influencers and trendsetters. The food is just as good as the ambiance, plus the staff is lovely. The owner is also Vietnamese so they know what they are doing. From rice bowls to buns, salad and catering, they do it!

Best Asian newcomers in Amsterdam

Paku Paku Amsterdam, Beukenplein 3H

Besides being the first Japanese fondue restaurant is the Netherlands, Paku paku is also a language bar where expats can meet to learn and speak Dutch to and from each other. What better way to get to know the Dutch culture then by sharing food and meeting locals! During dinner, guests drop their favourite fish, meat or veggies in the bubbling hot pot. You can compare it to a traditional fondue, but better and also a bit healthier because you are not frying your ingredients.

So which of these Asian Restaurants are you going to visit first?

Jacobsz, the restaurant in Amsterdam that sticks around

As you know, Amsterdam has countless so called “hotspots” that are poppin’ up like mushrooms. Some are trendy for a bit and disappear quite quickly. But some restaurants are here to stay. Jacobsz belongs to the ones that stick around, and we’re going to tell you why.

Jacobsz is located right on the corner of the Middenweg/Ringdijk in Amsterdam’s Eastside. The restaurant is situated inside a monumental building and thanks its name to the architect that designed the building many years ago.

Legend says that Napoleon received the key to the gates of old Amsterdam right here, 200 years ago.

Ever changing menu

There is no easy way to describe the menu at Jacobsz because they change it about every 7 weeks, but we can best describe it as good, honest seasonal food, accompanied by the best wines. Ordering is pretty simple. You can go for a 3, 4, or 5-course menu that includes carefully chosen wines from different regions. If you are up for it, you can also opt for the 6-course menu, which is only ordered per table. If you know me, you know I went for the last option. Wow. Even the amuse with mushroom and cream made me talk about Jacobsz for the next 2 weeks.

Jacobz Amsterdam
One of the current dishes at Jacobsz

I have to admit, I didn’t understand every ingredient that our waiter explained, but I didn’t care. It suited perfectly with the wines they served with each separate dish. Because I am a vegetarian I was a bit worried that I would get less better version of what my man had, but no. You couldn’t even compare the dishes he had.

Wine at restaurant Jacobz
Every bottle is suits a different dish

It might have something to do with the fact that most ingredients at Jacobsz are seasonal and local.

Menu Jacobsz

The Ambiance at Jacobsz

When I visit a restaurant, the ambience is just as important to me as the food. Needless to say that the interior at Jacobsz is simple but warm. Filled with people from all walks of life. Young professionals, couples, business partners or grandparents with their children. They all come back here to taste their ever changing menu. For those sunny days you have Bolder, their private terrace that you can book for gatherings and parties.

Jacobsz
Simple, but stylish

In conclusion, Jacobsz is here to stay and has officially been crowned one of the best restaurants by us and the people of Amsterdam.

Let us know when you are planning to go!

Love,

Elke

The Raindance Project | The concert that matters

This September you can enjoy a free concert in Amsterdam, Tanzania and Kenia that will be streamed all over the world, in order to raise awareness about climate change. It’s called the Raindance Project and includes a pretty impressive line-up artists and musicians, dancers and speakers.

Non-profit organisation JustDiggit has just announced that they will host a free concert in the Vondelpark Open air theater on the 14th of September 2019, starting at 12:00. Artists will include De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig, Joost van Bellen, Akwasi, Donnie, Naaz, Flexican and many more. Justdiggit ambassador Floortje Dessing and Tess Milne will be presenting. At the same time, The Raindance Project in Africa will be held in rural and drought-stricken areas, to inspire and activate the farmers who are implementing re-greening and rainwater harvesting techniques and spread the word.

It will be the mini Live Aid for climate change that we’ve been waiting for

Raising Awareness

This event is now more important than ever, while the Amazon is blazing on fire at the moment. Desertification is one of the most urgent threats to mankind, causing food and water scarcity, poverty, climate change and millions of climate refugees. The Raindance Project aims to create awareness but also celebrating the re-greening successes so far. But most of all demonstrate the urgency of climate change and promote one of the major solutions, nature.

If we can warm up the earth, we can also cool it down

A continues project

The Raindance Project is a true decade plan 2020 – 2030 and an open invitation to the rest of the world to join. Together with international partners such as the UN Environment it is the time to change the course of our narrative. Dutch radio station 3FM is official partner of The Raindance Project and will livestream the entire event. The event can also be followed via the official socials of Justdiggit, The Raindance Project and 3FM.

Check the full line up here:

The Raindance Project

One thing is for sure, you want to be there on the 14th of September. It will be the concert that can change your life.

NEW HOTSPOT | BENJI’S TOKO AMSTERDAM WEST

Meet your new best buddy in town: Benji’s Toko. The culinary Indonesian side of Benji’s. Not to mention that this new addition will take you right to the tropics with a jungle vibe in the middle of Amsterdam West. Located next to a waterfront with a handsome, sun-kissed terrace.

Time to expand

Proud. Flattered. The owners are grateful they got the change to open a second spot. A toko driven by their roots, Indonesian food heritage and a cosmopolitan twist. Almost three years ago – oh baby, time flies – I wrote an article about Benji’s. Such an addition for Amsterdam Eastside. And where the norm seems to be to open a spot in West firstly, followed by a second spot in the upcoming, vibrant Eastern part of Amsterdam, they have done it exactly the other way around.

Benji's Toko

Needless to say, that I was very-very curious about the newest creation. A concept inspired by the tropical spheres of Bali. With a two month workcation on the schedule this winter on this island, this absolutely was already the best preparation. Hello gorgeous! Benji’s Toko is a place where you can escape from the high-paced city life and find yourself in a peaceful, green oasis. Lots of plants, steel, rattan, other natural materials…and more plants.

Breakfast at Benji's Toko Amsterdam

All Day Indonesian Food

Once you set foot in this green-overloaded place your guts tell you that there’s Indonesian blood flowing through the toko. They life to eat. They adore the food moments. Sounds familiar? Maybe there’s a little Indo in you as well, who knows! Because of this food-is-the-Indo’s-number-one-spirit, Benji’s had to come up with an all-day food concept. So, Benji’s is the one with the all-day breakfast, Benji’s Toko with the all-day brunch menu and in the evenings shareable street food.

Beji's Toko Amsterdam

What.A.Menu!

It contains an abundance of tastebud-tempting dishes. Normally I have to cherry-pick between at most two alternatives. But at Benji’s Toko my belly was in for almost 90% of their pampering menu. Even the salads caught my attention. And to think that I sort of have a love-hate relationship with those green basterds. Thumbs up for you little Benjamin!

Benji's

Expect some happiness on your plate

Bali Inspired

As a matter of fact, the menu at Benji’s Toko would not be out of place at Bali. Easy-going. Photogenic. Bursting with passion. Açaí bowl, raw rainbow noodle salad, rendang fries, rainbow buns, satay, gado gado rolls, lava cake. And, of course, colourful cocktails and delicious coffee on the side. One by one tropical treats. Another reason to stop by is the crew. Equally important, they offer genuinely hospitable service. Let’s call it ‘joyful enthusiasm.’ With flair and a tiny pinch of craziness, but without fuss and fakeness. Love it!

Instead of taking a 15 hour flight, you can get the same vibe just around the corner at Benji’s Toko. Who’s in for a breakfast, lunch or dinner date at this mouthwatering newbie?

WONDR | The Instagram Paradise in Amsterdam

If you want to lay in a bad full of marshmallows or boost your Instagram likes with interactive pastel walls, you can do it soon! On the 18th of September, a new pop-up museum by the name of WONDR will open in Amsterdam.

With more museums in Amsterdam like Moco Museum NEMO focussing on being Interactive and playful, the younger generation is showing more interest in art and installations than ever before. Is it sharable on social media? Then your museum is likely to become a hit.

Get lost in an otherworldly jungle. Dive into a sea of pink marshmallows. Dance under a glittering sky. Write on the walls. Sing your heart out. Blend into artworks and experience what dreams are made of. – Wondr.

Wondr Amsterdam

What is WONDR?

The pop-up museum describes themselves as “the secret ingredient to happiness” and when you check out their website, you are welcomed by pastel colours and disco balls. If it’s happiness or not, it is definitely the ingredient for a successful venture. Take the Ice-Cream museum in Los Angeles for example. It was sold out for months and getting a ticket was like getting the golden chocolate bar from Willy Wonka.

Where art and fun meets

Together with artist, makers and designers WONDR is going to display 15 colourful and playful installations where people can lose themselves in. Think of a swimming pool filled with marshmallows, a glittershower or chill out at the WONDR Café full of Instagrammable snacks.

Childish? We’re secretly exited by this pop-up! This interactive playground will be open until March 2020 so reserve your tickets for €24,50 to avoid disappointment.

The Legendary Supperclub Amsterdam is back with a new concept!

If you know your way around the nightlife in Amsterdam, you must have heard of the infamous dining club. With extravagant acts, overwhelming visuals and a grand 5-course menu, Supperclub has been able to surprise its guests since 1993. But from the 1st of July, they have updated concept with a changing theme every 3 months. We booked a dinner on one of their signature white beds.

The Concept

To begin with, Supperclub offers a unique dining experience that in our opinion you must experience at least once. Famous for their white interior and shared beds, you can enjoy an extravagant show curated by creative manager Marc van Loon. This results in a night full of surprises and because you are on a bed next to people you don’t know, it’s a great conversation starter!

Supperclub Amsterdam dinner show

Dinner in bed

You start off with a cocktail in the bar downstairs and you will be called over when your bed is ready. To begin with you will need to take your shoes off and get comfortable on the all white bedding. Your Supperclub host will be there if you want to order cocktails or if you have any questions. You don’t have to wait long for your first course because you can open the surprise box located at your table that includes pieces of sushi, bread & butter, crayfish and cheese. Obviously, the menu keeps changing, so you never know what you will get. Tip: If you have special dietary requirements, tell them when you make your reservation and upon arrival.

Supperclub food

In between the courses the resident DJ plays the best funky tech-house tunes and you will get to enjoy a total of 4 performances during the evening. What the show exactly consists off will be a little secret, but we can tell you it’s worth your while. (we especially loved the last part!)

Cost & Verdict:

Dinner is €69,- for 5-courses of exotic eats with culinary arts. Drinks are settled with you on the evening itself. Be sure to order one of their in-house cocktails! At Supperclub you don’t just come for the food. You come here for the whole experience. In short, we think Supperclub Amsterdam is the perfect place to bring your date. And with the new changing theme, you will never get bored! Are you ready to dream with your eyes wide open?

Stan & Co has settled down in Amsterdam

After Utrecht, Arnhem and Zeist, a fourth STAN & CO restaurant has opened up in Amsterdam. A beautiful bar-restaurant with a tasteful menu and amazing interior! Here too they do not deviate from their concept: there is no breakfast, lunch or dinner menu. You can order what you want, whenever you want! Very nice if you are always late for breakfast (like me) or want a piece of salmon for lunch.

Interior

The building consists out of creative meeting spaces and co-workspaces that breathes inspiration and creativity in terms of interior and design. The entrance to STAN & CO is currently being transformed into a pop-up gallery where changing exhibitions of artists are exhibited (pretty cool!). Once inside, you will immediately notice the large island bar in which a big staircase rises to the upper floor with an additional bar and DJ booth. A warm pink-orange colour is combined with the sturdy industrial style of the building. The new STAN consists of a large space (two floored) with many different places to sit, however they managed to make it very cozy. You can also settle down on the comfy couches with your laptop, making it a nice spot to study or to have a meeting.

Stand & Co Amsterdam

stan & Co Amsterdam

Flexible menu

STAN & CO serves a wide selection of dishes that can be ordered at any time of the day. A steak for breakfast, a cocktail with lunch or a brioche egg benedict in the evening; it’s all possible! Lovers of Asian cuisine will also find ramen noodle bowls, the bao bun shiitake and the Asian salad. There are also many vegetarian dishes on the menu, some of which can be prepared vegan. And for the sweet tooths, the “sweets” category on the menu is a must go, The STAN’s SNCKR (a homemade square snicker) and the #OMG (a very photo genetic oreo parfait) are recommended! In addition, STAN & CO offers a nice selection of wines, beers, cocktails, special coffees and freshly made lemonades.

Menu Stan & Co Amsterdam

Groups & Parties

This all-day hotspot is easily accessible and has a menu where everyone can find something they like! It is also a very good spot if you want to eat with a larger group. Also, they are planning to have a DJ program running from Thursday to Sunday evening. Overall, the new STAN & CO is a cozy hang-out / place to settle down with your friends when you are in the Amsterdam East area, whether for a coffee on the terrace or for a cocktail in the evening.

The Avocado Show Downtown | Open Soon!

After the first Avocado Show opened in De Pijp and their second extension The Avocado Show To Go on the Willemsparkweg in Amsterdam, The Avocado Show completes its formula when the new Avocado Show Downtown opens from 11th of July.

Last night, the first lucky few could taste the menu of the brand new Avocado Show Downtown

It’s pretty healthy food

As with all other locations of The Avocado Show, every dish at Downtown is made with love from sustainable avocados – with a focus on taste, presentation and originality. Healthy dishes that also look nice on the plate. They call it pretty healthy food, and let’s be honest, it is! This results in classic dishes with an avocado twist like the bun burgers are also on the menu. But also innovative dishes such as avocado fries and vegan peanut butter avo ice cream. Every dish is carefully styled for color in order to make breakfast, lunch or dinner not only healthy but also pretty. Both at the table and at delivery or takeaway.

The Avocado Show Downtown food

On an iconic location, The Avocado Show Downtown serves a new dinner experience alongside the well-known breakfast and lunch dishes, including spectacular poké bowls, salads, burgers, avocado fries, tacos and truffle guacamole.

From waiting in line to reservations

While you still have to stand in line at the Pijp location, the Avocado Show Downtown location on Keizersgracht makes it easier than ever to score a spot. The sunny terrace and the restaurant with the signature interior, offers more than 100 seats for breakfast, lunch and dinner. As always, walk-ins are welcome, but at this location it is also possible to make a reservation via the website.
