The Treatwell Series » Cupping

Remember the time when Gwyneth Paltrow was photographed with red circles on her back? This was the time when cupping made it’s entrance in the wide world.  Nobody had ever heard of it before. Or at least, not many. Since then Jennifer Aniston, Justin Bieber and even athletes like Michael Phelps have used cupping. I had never tried it, but cupping is suppose to have many health benefits. Time to find out why ancient trend is so good for you!

What is Cupping
Even though it might not sound so familiar, cupping is an ancient method used by Egyptians and later found it’s way into Chinese Alternative Medicine and practises. Traditionally, glass cups are placed on your skin (mostly on your back and legs) and heated with fire to suck the air out of the cups, creating suction. This can be quite risky because of the heat, so most salons use other materials like silicone and suck the air out with a special device. By cupping, it’s believed that problems such as headache, muscle and join pain are relieved. It’s also suppose to stimulate your blood circulation and smoothes out your skin.

The Art of Massage
Time to find out! I booked my first cupping treatment with Art of Massage, run by Cerise. After a holiday in Thailand, Cerise gained an interest in massages and wanted to explore more than just the traditional Thai massages we all know. She decided to explore the world of cupping. She tells me that because this is my first ever cupping treatment, she won’t go all the way. Cupping can be quite intense. She starts with a short massage to find out if I have any knots in my muscles. After that, she is ready to place the cups. My pain barrier is pretty high, but when she applied the first cup on my back..HELLO! You definitely feel it!Because the power of cupping is more intense than a deep tissue massage, it might feel a bit uncomfortable at first. After a few moments, the feeling does get less intense and you are able to breath it away. She applies the cups at the places where I felt most tense, and she also decides to include my legs.

And then starts to move them around, like giving a massage. HELLO 2.0!

She leaves the cups there for about 10 minutes or so, and then starts to move them around, like giving a massage. HELLO 2.0! My shoulder area is fine, but when she does this around my weak spot, the hips, I have a difficult time to breath at a normal pace. Something is seriously going on and I ask her to take a picture. It looks pretty weird and shocking at the same time, but wow, can you imagine what this does to your blood circulation! Especially if you’re walking around with an old injury or you just can’t seem to loosen up, this will do the trick!

At Treatwell Cupping
Alien or Elke? 😉

My Verdict: By far the most pain I experienced during the Treatwell Series, but nothing I could not handle. My knots were gone, and my legs felt like the received an intense massage I think I could only benefit from. Looking at the pictures you might feel a bit cautious, but remember, cupping is very safe. It wouldn’t be around for ages if it wasn’t. And best of all, after the treatment I looked exactly like Gwyneth Paltrow! (Ok, minus the blond hair, long legs and flat tummy) Oh, and my circles disappeared after about 5 days.

Cerise tells me that you can’t get a 100% result immediately and she advises people to come for at least 3 to 4 treatments. Her regular customers don’t really feel the pain anymore when they return for their 2nd or 3rd session, meaning that you’re body is actually un-tightening.

I’m curious to see who of you have tried cupping before and what was your experience? If you are curious yourself, you can book my treatment here. For all other treatments visit Treatwell and book online!

Elke

14 x Vintage Stores in Amsterdam you must check out

Vintage is hot and we love it! First of all, it’s sustainable, and such a great excuse to wear something that was also cool a few seasons ago. Let’s check out the 14 best vintage stores in Amsterdam at the moment.

The Thriftshop
Albert Cuypstraat 187

The new kid on the blog! The Thriftshop is run by PR lady Tedje Fliers and her companion Dina El Basri. Did you know that women only use about 10% of their closets? Crazy right? Well, the main thing we love about this store, is that you can bring your clothes that are just hanging there, so you can make someone else happy with it. Whatever is sold, you get 30% from the profits! (yes, I also  brought my old Levi’s!) They only opened yesterday, so all the good items are still there (but hurry). Facebook / Instagram

We Are Vintage
Kinkerstraat 193 & Eerste v Swindenstraat 43
We love this store because it’s such a nice layout! You can easily spend more than an hour in this store without realising. Denim dungarees, floral dresses, cowboy boots, hats, men & women, it’s all here! Instagram

Jutka & Riska
Here they sell vintage combined with a new collection. Clever! At Jutka & Riska you will find bold and funky colours, the latest styles, and many cute accessories. They also have an online shop, which is great for the lazy shopper. There are 2 stores in Amsterdam, one in Haarlem and one in Antwerp. www.jutkaenriska.com

Zipper
They sell some of the best trousers in our opinion! Baggy comfortable trousers you wear on a Sunday…or every day for that matter. (guilty!) Also check out their jewelry, watches, sunglasses and hats! www.zipperstore.nl

I love Vintage

This retro style vintage shop is perfect for those Bettie Page summer dresses and if your looking to wear something for a special occasion. They sell all the way back from the twenties up until the eighties. Check out the online shop where you can also check if they have your favorite item in stock. Easy peasy Vintage! www.ilovevintage.com

Kilo Shop
Waterloopplein 189
Instead of buying your items at a set price, you add your items on the scale and pay per weight! This can be super affordable if you choose your items the right way. Prices are ranged in different color and style categories. The Kilo Shop imports their clothes from all over the world and sells brands from London, Paris, and Tokyo. www.kiloshop.nl

Bij Ons Vintage
Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 150 / Reestraat 13
If you want to go festival shopping, this store is your spot! Men can go crazy on tropical shirts, while the women can go for jumpsuits or cool summer dresses. New arrivals everyday! www.bijons-vintage.nl

Klein Berlijn
Middenweg 36

I used to work with the lovely owner of this cute store. She had the idea years ago, and even used her home to host a few vintage sales back then. Her cool style never seemed to fade because she’s been running Klein Berlijn ever since. Okok, the clothes are not real vintage and old, but they have a cool vintage look, and that’s why Klein Berlijn belongs in our list. www.kleinberlijn.com

For Kids
Kids grow fast AF. I know, because I’m a mother of a baby boy and don’t want to buy brand new clothes each time around. I never knew that vintage shopping for your child could be such a bargain! Sometimes I buy 4 items for just 12 euro! (and this includes jeans, jumpers, shoes and high end brands). Secondly, it’s super sustainable! Here are some of my faves;

Old West
De Clercqstraat

By far my favorite vintage clothing store for kids! The concept is great; I bring my son’s old clothes to them, they check, and you get a code. Each time when I return, they can check how much I’ve sold and use that money to buy new items in the store! They only take on clothing that is in tiptop condition and they prefer good brands like Impf & Elfs and Le Petit Batau. All the clothing is divided into size and colours, and moms and dads all over Amsterdam bring in new stuff on a daily basis. Friends Floortje and Sofie run this fantastic store that also sells some new items for a great price. www.oldwestamsterdam.nl

JunJun
De Clercqstraat 97

Situated in the same street as Old West, you can find another great vintage store for kids with the same concept. You can find clothes, toys, baby stuff, strolers, baby seats and more. www.junjun.nl

Wollepop
Bosboom Toussaintstraat 49
Another great kids store with high quality clothing, toys and children accessories. Sustainability is key here and besides the concept, they also provide led lighting and better isolation. www.wollepop.nl

Kids & Queens
Rietwijkerstraat 32

If you are looking for high end kids brands such as Vingino, DNKY, Burberry, Tumble & Dry, you should definitely visit Kids & Queens. Their sizes go from 50cm until 140cm. Prices are (understandably) a bit higher than the above mentioned kids vintage stores in Amsterdam, but nevertheless, it’s nice to spoil you’re kid now and then! www.kidsandqueens.nl

Enjoy your shopping peeps!

Love,

Elke

Kindred Spirits » The store inspired by Travel

It’s been a while since we’ve highlighted a store in Amsterdam. Well, the time has come and this time it’s a store with a travel story; Kindred Spirits.

The Story
Kindred Spirits is a lifestyle brand that describes itself as “encouraged by the desire to explore the world”. Founders Martijn & Jovanna combined their love for travel and garments and were particularly inspired by countries like Morocco, Turkey and South Africa. When they returned to Amsterdam, they decided they wanted to create a brand that would bring those worlds together, yet be authentic and of high quality. It all started with the famous Kiboot, this unmissable festival boot created from old recycled rugs, was the item that every girl wanted. The brand eventually evolved into Kindred Spirits and the story continues..

When you enter the store, you will see a large wall, covered with the most amazing boots.

Kindred Spirits
The famous Kiboots lined up

The Store
The flagship store opened back in 2015 and sells much more than just their famous boots. Here you can find colourful rugs, pillows, bags, accessories and gift ideas. All products are of high quality and . You can tell that all the items are inspired by travel. When you enter the store, you will see a large wall, covered with the most amazing boots. All different colors and sizes, because every pair is unique. When I arrived to pick up my ordered boots, the girls who worked there were just unpacking a huge order that they’ve received just after Christmas. Great to see that this boot never goes out of style. If your heading to Coachella this year, be sure to get a pair!

All we want for Christmas is.. this new hair treatment by The Color

Going to the hairdressers is something we all do on a regular basis right? Euhm, well, I didn’t. I used to cut my hair twice a year because I was afraid it would be too short, so ignored the split ends and everything that comes along with it. What I did do however, is to freshen up my look with a new color. Getting a new “shade” for your hair has never been more popular and even the brightest of colors are walking around in Amsterdam. One of the best colouring salons in Amsterdam, The Color, is a leader in the pack when it comes to the latest hair colouring trends. They now offer something called …. I went to try it out.

The Color
Founded in 2016, The Color (first known as Colorista) first opened in De Pijp district and another location followed soon after. Color specialists can turn your dull hair into something funky or pretty like it’s magic. Color is their focus but you can also get your hair cut as they are all trained hairdressers. Besides the hair treatments, The Color is also a college for trainees that want to learn the magic of new hair colouring techniques.

The Magic Treatment!
At the Color they keep on developing and explore new hair concepts. One of those is the Cellophanes treatment. The Cello what? You can describe it as a lipgloss for your hair and is also known as a semi permanent coloring method. Good to know is, that Cellophanes is made out of natural ingredients and therefore free from ammonia, alcohol and peroxide. It also strengthens hair, preserves natural moisture balance and protects against UV.

I needed to try this and last week I booked my first Cellophane treatment. After a conversation with my Color specialist, we decided to go for a little bit champagne gloss and after a wash, the Cellophane was applied and heated with a blower around my head. This way your hair cuticles open up and absorb everything better. After about 20 minutes and another wash, I was outside the door with extremely shiny, healthy hair.

Cellophane Treatment
Shine bright like a diamond!

The color and shine will fade gradually overtime but you can enjoy it for at least 3 months. Just in time for Christmas girls!

The Antwerp City Guide by Wander-Lust

If you live in the Netherlands, Antwerp is the perfect place to escape to for a city break, especially during the wintertime! We’ve been there many times and checked out some of the best spots for you to enjoy food, drinks and more. Here’s our Antwerp City Guide!

How to get there
Well, you have 2 options and they are both as easy. You can take the train or you can go by car. Both options take around the same time (2 hours) but we prefer the train because you can chill, look out of the window and you will arrive at one of the most beautiful and impressive trains stations in Europe. A  return train ticket from Amsterdam to Antwerp will cost around 30 -40 euro. If you go by car, you might arrive earlier but if you are unlucky, you will get caught in slow traffic and your trip might take up to 3 hours plus you will have to pay for parking.

“This Antwerp City Guide is for wanderers who love food, shops and exploring”

Antwerp City Guide

Where To Eat?
The most important question of course! Well, in Antwerp you won’t be short of food choices. Especially lunch! There are so many hotspots around that we can’t mention them all, but these are our favorites!
» Tinsel, some say that you can get the best breakfast in town here. Tinsel is located near the water where you will find tons of other restaurants. www.tinsel.be
» Native Bio Bistro, This hidden pearl is by far our favorite lunch spot in Antwerp. This bistro serves fresh, original, and good quality food. It’s organic, locally produced with sustainable ingredients, this is Native! Vegan and organic food lovers will love this place! During the summer they open a very nice terrace. www.native.bio
» Bubble Waffle, located in the Mercado foodcourt, this tasty waffle stand awesome! Go here if you feel like something sweet. www.bubblewaffle.be
» Divers, a smoothie-bowl bar for your healthy cravings. Great for some Instagram worthy pics, if that’s what your after. They are located in the Volkstraat 9.
»De Broers van Julienne, when we need to grab a quick and healthy bite, we go here. In a side street of the Kammenstraat – with lots of boutiques – you will find this small cute little restaurant. You can take away the best quiches, soups,  salads and other warm healthy dishes. Besides that, they sell oil, wine, coffee, juices and other delicatessen. They  also offer catering and cook workshops.
» Raw Salad Company, unfortunately they’ve closed their doors in Antwerp but they promised to be back soon with a new location. The name gives it away. Raw salads galore. The salads are extremely tasty and fill you up enough to get on with your day. They also sell juices, wraps, cakes and other healthy snacks. We will keep you updated if they open a shop.
» Umami
, fine dining Japanese style. They restyled not long ago and you can eat amazing Dim Sum here. www.umami-antwerp.be

» Il Famosi, this is by far the best Italian restaurant in Antwerp. Go here for a romantic dinner and if you want more than just pizza.

Where To Drink Coffee?
» Mirlo’s, the coffee is great and the location is cute. They also serve breakfast and lunch and it’s all homemade. www.mirlos.be
» Buchbar, surrounded by literature and stories, this coffee bar is different than others. Owned by actress Kim Hertogs, you can feel the passion for books, women empowerment and people. Find more info about this special spot on their website.
» Butchers Coffee, located in a former butcher, this trendy coffee bar takes the coffee business serious and are planning to create their own coffee blend. If the sun is out, you can sit outside on the benches. You can find it on the Kasteelstraat 57.
» Caffenation, self blended coffee and probably the oldest one in Belgium as they started more than 13 years ago. Besides the coffee it’s also a shop and a great place to hang out. www.caffenation.be
» Texas Coffee, for pink latte’s and coffee served in an ice-cream cone!

Where to Shop & Stroll?
You have many options in Antwerp when it comes to shopping. No matter what type of person you are, there will be a shopping district that will suit your needs. We have selected 3 area’s that we love.
» Kammenstraat & Kloosterstraat, these 2 streets in South Antwerp offer vintage, exclusive boutiques, living and alternative shops. While most shops are closed on Sunday, the kloosterstraat is one of the only streets open from around 12pm.
» Het Eilandje, this is especially great during summer because you can find a lot of outside patio’s here. Worth mentioning is the MAS Museum where they have many exhibitions on display. The museum is set next to the little harbor and owns a large rooftop which has free entrance.
» De Volkstraat, go here for boutiques, concept stores, perfume and coffee.

» The Meir, this is Antwerp’s highstreet. Although it’s not our favorite place to shop, we need to mention it because here you will find all the shops you need. From Zara, Mango, Levi’s, it’s all here. The street is beautiful but always busy. Watch your purse and don’t stay too long!

Where To Sleep?
Somehow we always end up in the same hotels. Never change a winning team! These are our 3 favorite places to stay.

» Hotel Franq, is a new kid on the block and super cool! Just recently opened in October, the building used to be a bank and you can still find the big safe intact which is now being converted into a gym. When you enter the impressive foyer, you almost forget you set foot in a hotel. The rooms are stylish and have a large bathroom with rain showers. When it’s nice weather, you can sit outside in the garden overlooking an old victorian house. www.hotelfranq.com

hotel-franq
Hotel Franq

» Hotel Les Nuits, we love boutique hotels and this hotel is one of the cutest ones out there! All 21 rooms are designed a bit different but have the same style and feature impressive en-suites. They have recently changed their reception area and removed their suites rooms which is a shame because I really loved those but this way the hotel is more compact and fits better together. Breakfast is great and the location is great! Book a room here!

Antwerp City Guide. Elke in Hotel Les Nuits

» Banks, another great hotel at a very central location. It’s modern and a great place to meet people downstairs. Oh, and they also have a rooftop terrace so this is a great option during the summer. Then again, you will be out exploring Antwerp..;-) Book your stay here.

So are you planning your next tip to Antwerp yet? 😉

Must visit store, DIY Soap

Hello winter equals hello to dry skin. For me at least. As soon as the heating at home goes up, and the leaves are starting to fall down the trees, my skin reacts as if it knows it needs some extra attention. There are sooo many products and brands out there that promise you a soft skin but I’m not a big fan of all the chemicals that are added. Gladly I discovered this briljant store called DIY Soap, a shop in Amsterdam where you can create your own scrubs and creams made out of natural and organic ingredients.

DIY Soap

Pure Ingredients
At DIY Soap you can shop in two ways; you can buy a ready-made scrub or cream, or create your own from scratch. The last option is more fun so that’s exactly what I did! In the store you can find a rack where you can find cans of oils to create your product with (coconut, almond, olive). Next to that you have a table where you can find salts, sugars, coffee and concentrated oils such as lavender, orange or roses. Pimp your product with some flowers, dried fruits or lavender pieces. Every product is vegan except the honey. (but rest assured it comes from a local and organic beekeeper).

Sustainable Packaging
One of the great things about creating your own product, is that you can bring your own packing materials. DIY Soap highly encourages to re-use your old shampoo bottles or cream containers. The packaging at DIY Soap is made out of glass and is always re-usable. This way, you only need to come back for the ingredients! You can also buy the products online (www.diysoap.nl) and in several stores across The Netherlands and Belgium (concept store Hutspot being one of those).

The people behind the product
besides the ingredients and packaging, they also have a great behind-the-scenes-story. The people who make the ready-to-buy products are created by people with a minor mental disability, at the Gemiva centre in the city of Leiden. How beautiful is that!

The Avocado Show opens up The Backstage

Since we wrote about the opening of avocado restaurant The Avocado Show in Amsterdam, it’s been busy times for the 3 entrepreneurs. They knew it would probably be a succes, but they had never dreamed of the international coverage it has gotten so far. David Wolfe, Vice, ELLE and other international platforms have all posted about this popular restaurant and before they knew it, people from all over the world wanted to experience the first avocado restaurant in the world. They are planning to expand in several countries around the world so there might be an Avocado Show near you in 2018!

the-backstage-the-avocado-show

Neighbours complained that their street is always packed with people, so they came up with a solution

Extremely Populair
Even before it opened, avocado lovers spend the night in front of the doors to be the first ones to check it out. Talking about dedication! But the restaurant’s popularity isn’t to everybody’s joy. Neighbours complained that their street is always packed with people day and night, to try the amazing menu. Innovating as they are, they came up with a solution. The Backstage. The Backstage is a pop-up avocado store situated pretty much next door to The Avocado Show, so people can shop, and find perfectly ready to eat avocado’s at an avocado wall (yes, no more pinching in the supermarket!). Meanwhile you’re buddy or lover can wait to be seated without annoying the neighbourhood. Briljant. The Backstage will have a similar interior (pink chairs yehess!), and will sell tons of avocado goodies and not just the edible ones. You are able to buy pins, cookbooks, bags, inflatable avocado’s and merchandise.
