You can’t skip De Jordaan. The most typical neighbourhood for your city break in Amsterdam. Visit, as we call it, the ‘Italy town’ of Amsterdam. You find it in the Tweede Anjeliersdwarsstraat. Ok, it is just one street but it is great in the evening. You can get an amazing pizza at La Perla or eat modern Italian food in style at La Fiorita. End the evening in summer with the best Italian ice cream at Monte Pelmo.

Another great experience for your City break Amsterdam in De Jordaan is to go on Saturday morning to the Noordermarkt. It is a biological market, so yes, you buy jewellery for a loaf of bread. But the experience is worth an edible jewel. And a good and hip coffee place with great home-made pastries is ‘Saint Jean’ just around the corner of the market. Or get some traditional Amsterdam Apple Pie at De Winkel.

You don’t want to get into tourist traps. Try to avoid the city centre where you’ll find Central Station or red light district as soon as possible. Escape towards Amsterdam’s Northside, an upcoming neighbourhood with the most unique experiences for your city break Amsterdam.

West side of our Amsterdam city break story
The west side of Amsterdam is amazing. The most creative people sit down every morning for a great coffee at Ikaria. A Greek run coffee spot without indoor seating. Even when it is under zero people are still waiting in line to get their coffee from the friendliest faces.

If you don’t want to be in the cold during your city break, you can take a seat inside on the opposite at the Karavaan. An all day food place with a great menu and lovely interior.
Next off visit the Vondelpark and put yourself down with a nice beer and pizza at ‘Het Blauwe Theehuis’. This is the best break you can give yourself. The mix of people that visit this place is amazing; from young to old, tourist to local. It all mixes very smoothly.
If you are a sustainable foodie, visit The Little Plant Pantry, to get inspired. In the same street you will find a restaurant called Gertrude which is very popular and one of our favourite dining restaurants in Amsterdam. Always full so reserve at least 2 weeks in advance though!
East side of town
For great coffee in the east of Amsterdam go to Coffee Bru or Rum baba. After that, visit Artis, Amsterdams Zoo and go for a lunch inside the Zoo bij ‘De Serre’. A vegan restaurant using the herbs and spices from their garden. In the winter you can also warm up with mulled wine here.
For lunch on one of the best terraces of Amsterdam visit De Ysbreeker. It one of our all time favourites. You could spend the whole day there reading the newspaper and watching people. Or visit Hortus Botanicus and if you are more into museum during your city break Amsterdam, visit Museum Rembrandthuis or the Joods Museum.
A great pizzeria in Amsterdam east is called ‘Oost’ or visit ‘Louis Louis’ for a more hipster environment. A bit more out of town east you find café Cliche, which is anything but cliché and if with kids, they can enjoy the same dishes but small sized.
Don’t rent a bicycle during your city break in Amsterdam if you are not a pro
Visit different neighbourhoods by foot. Cycling in Amsterdam is actually only for pros. Please don’t ruin your city break Amsterdam, by hitting the tram rails. Instead, move from neighbourhood to neighbourhood like a snob. Take a fiets taxi, grab an Uber, a boat taxi or use Sixt Share for short rides through the city.
