09 Oct DISCOVER NORTHEAST SICILY
The eastern part of Sicily is a captivating blend of dramatic landscapes, ancient history, and vibrant coastal life. Dominated by the imposing presence of Mount Etna — Europe’s most active volcano.
Stay here; Picciolo Etna Golf Resort Sicily
Address: Strada Statale 120, Km 200 – 95012 Castiglione di Sicilia.
On the mountains of beautiful Sicily, about 650 meters above sea level, you’ll find the stunning Picciolo Etna Golf Resort. After spending the last 3 days here, I’ve gathered some beautiful insights about this place. So let’s get started. Arriving is already a journey on its own, since you’re surrounded by the most breathtaking mountains and at the foot of Europe’s largest volcano; Mount Etna.
The resort offers over 100 rooms and suites, and features a gorgeous luxury spa where you can enjoy a heated indoor pool, steam room, sauna, and a fully equipped fitness area. If you’re a golf lover, you’re in the right place! You can take golf lessons here (definitely recommend) and play on a stunning 5,780 meter long golf course. The restaurant serves delicious food, with Sicilian specialties taking center stage. There’s also a wide selection of wines, and thanks to Etna’s fertile volcanic soil, they carry a unique mineral and smoky taste you won’t easily find elsewhere. My personal favorite part? Dining under a magical starry sky.
Eat here:

Best places to visit in Northeast Sicily
This region offers a unique mix of nature and culture. Whether you’re exploring UNESCO-listed cities, tasting fresh seafood by the sea, or hiking through volcanic trails, this region is ready to be explored.
Reliving history in Savoca
High up on a Sicilian hill, Savoca feels like stepping back in time. From The Godfather film spots to hidden cobblestone alleys, this little village has a charm you can’t ignore. I spent an afternoon here for Wanderlust and want to share a few spots that are worth checking out. If you’re a Godfather fan, I would recommend visiting the iconic Bar Vitelli. What I really liked about it is that it gives you a glimpse into the past. Order a refreshing granita or a classic espresso, soak in the atmosphere, and feel the movie history all around you.
In addition of the Godfather movie you also have the Church of San Nicolo. Another Godfather filming location. Michael Corleone’s wedding was filmed right here. Savoca is all about slow exploring. Its narrow alleys, stone archways, and weathered houses are perfect for strolling, getting lost, and snapping photos that feel like postcards. A few tips: Wear comfy shoes (trust me, those hills and cobblestones are no joke). For a quieter vibe, visit in the morning or late afternoon.
Strolling through Taormina
After spending a day in Taormina I completely fell in love with its colorful streets, boutique shops, and cozy little cafés. By sitting high on a hilltop, the town gives you the most stunning views of the Ionian Sea and Mount Etna. It’s almost impossible not to be amazed. If you love shopping, Taormina surely is the right place to go to. Each shop has its own style and vibe, which makes strolling through the streets feel like a little adventure. From high end designer stores to charming little boutiques, and shops that celebrate Sicily’s rich traditional culture.
You can also feel the traces of its Greek past, especially at the Ancient Theatre. This beautiful theatre still hosts events and concerts today, and walking around it really makes you step back in time. A must see if you have time. Different from the history and shopping. There’s also a gorgeous park called Villa Comunale, also known as Public Gardens . From here, you can enjoy the Sicilian coastline, surrounded by beautiful trees and cacti. For all my yoga lovers you can even join a class in this peaceful spot.
Beach days in Giardini Naxos
Naxos was my last stop in beautiful Sicily. Naxos is a small coastal village located just below Taormina. The crystal clear blue sea with its pleasant temperature and striking lava rocks made it perfect for swimming and simply enjoying the breathtaking view. Here are a few of my personal highlights:
Beaches and restaurants
Naxos is known for its long sandy beaches, rare for this coast. Our favorites: Recanati for a lively vibe, Lido di Naxos for a relaxed swim near cafés, and Schisò for a stunning view of Taormina. Above all, the restaurants and food in Giardini Naxos is delicious and affordable. You can go from the traditional Italian pizza to fish and many more Sicilian dishes. You’ll leave happy and full.
Seafront Promenade
In the evening, the promenade comes alive with markets, music, gelato, and sea views.
Archaeological Park
Walk through the ruins of the first Greek colony in Sicily 734 BC. Old city walls, temples and a little museum make it worth a stop if you love history.
Mount Etna
From Naxos it’s super easy to join a trip to Europe’s most active volcano. You can hike, take the cable car, or go with a jeep tour to see the craters. Nice to know: you can also book this tour through Picciolo as an exclusive experience which we did.
After exploring the eastern side of Sicily, I can honestly say it stole a piece of my heart. Every corner has its own magic, and there is still more to explore. Trust me — once you’ve been here, you’ll already be planning your next trip back.
