WHERE TO STAY IN DRENTHE

WHERE TO EAT
The cuisine in Drenthe is influenced by its agricultural heritage, focusing on hearty, simple, and locally-sourced ingredients. Some typical foods you can expect in Drenthe Roggebrood (Rye Bread) a dark bread is made from rye flour. Drentse Aardappels (Drenthe Potatoes) The traditional dish Hutspot and Asparagus. You can find many of these ingredients and dishes across the many restaurants in the area, and below you can find the ones we tried.
Herberg de Aelderstroom
Herberg de Aelderstroom offers a culinary delight! Enjoy a surprising menu with herbs from their own garden, and be pampered by the super friendly host. He even made fantastic non-alcoholic drinks that paired perfectly with the menu. The cozy atmosphere and the tour of the inn, including the hunting room and sheepfold, made it extra special. Restaurant Voscheheugte
Dining at Voscheheugte is a treat! The interior feels like a cozy living room, and outside you sit snug under a large tarp tent with fairy lights. The food is delicious and the staff incredibly friendly. No wonder it’s always busy here. It’s located in the middle of nature, perfect if you’re staying at the nearby campsite.
Restaurant de Drentsche Aa
After canoeing, relax at Restaurant de Drentsche Aa. The terrace by the water is beautiful, but inside is also cosy. Enjoy dishes like Groninger mustard soup and friendly service. The relaxed atmosphere found throughout Drenthe completes the experience. de-drentsche-aa.nl
Restaurant ‘t Oelnbret
For a decent lunch, head to Restaurant ‘t Oelnbret. Whether you choose a three-course menu or à la carte, indoors or on the terrace (weather permitting), the food was not out of this world, but enjoyable. I enjoyed a tuna sandwich while my friend savored a hamburger. oelnbret.nl
Eko Tours – Early Birds Excursion
Up early for the Early Birds excursion, but it’s worth it! Ride through the Drenthe nature at sunrise in electric buggies, feeling like you have the world to yourself. Weiteveen, Bargerveen – Excursion with Guide Henry
A super fun walk through Bargerveen with guide Henry. Start at the largest sheepfold in the Netherlands and explore the heath as Henry enthusiastically shares the history and future of the area. Recreatie Breeland – Canoeing on the Hunze
Escape the hustle and bustle with a canoe trip on the Hunze at Recreatie Breeland. After a friendly welcome and simple instructions, you paddle calmly through narrow streams and under bridges. Enjoy the peace and sounds of nature around you. You can store your valuables in a waterproof barrel. After a short portage over the dike, continue paddling on the Hunze. Perfect for clearing your mind!
