03 Aug Drive the Dutch Coastal Route by Wander-Lust
The Dutch are blessed with endless beaches that stretch out for miles on end. Follow this coastal route by car or motorbike and you will pass by the best beaches, nature reserves and cool beachclubs.
Together with TomTom we navigated and planned this stunning Dutch coastal route with the GO Premium so you guys know exactly where to go and stop along the way.
Bloemendaal
Start you trip and drive to Bloemendaal aan Zee where you can find the crowds and popular beachclubs such as Republiek Bloemendaal. After a short coffee break, continue your way to Duin en Kruidbergweg where you can park your car and take a walk in the forest and the beautiful National Park Kennemerduinen. Find out where to find the best Dutch National Parks.
Recently renovated, this place has been completely transformed into a sophisticated beachclub with earthy tones and appointed interior designer Anne Claus did a magnificent job styling it. Stop here for a morning coffee and enjoy the fresh sea breeze before it gets too crowded. Needless to say that Bloemendaal aan Zee is a very popular bathing spot so it can get quite busy.
National Park Kennemerduinen
Continue your way and drive back towards the greenest districts in the Netherlands, Santpoort-Noord. Here you’ll find one of the entrances to National Park Kennemerduinen and if you like history, you can stop at the Brederode Castle where you pay only a 5 euro entrance fee. If you decide to park your vehicle, park at Duin- en Kruidbergerweg 76, near stunning country estate Duin & Kruidberg. From there you literally walk into the forest that will eventually lead to the sand dunes and beach. Mind you, walking to the beach from there takes at least 1,5 hours. In our opinion it’s one of the most beautiful beach entrances (see photo), but the only way to get here is by bicycle or foot. Parking your car and taking a walk in the forest is already worth this stop.
Wijk aan Zee
After a walk, you might be hungry so it’s time to continue your journey. Stop at IJmuiden beach if you want, but one of our favourite beach clubs is Timboektoe in Wijk aan Zee, where you can park your car for free! Don’t be put off by the industrial look, the vibe here is relaxed and If you like to surf, Wijk aan Zee is the perfect spot to learn. You can rent surfing gear at various beach clubs along the coast.
Egmond aan Zee
Up next is a coastal town that is really upcoming. Egmond aan Zee doesn’t have many beach bars as the above mentioned, but we expect this coastline to evolve in the next coming years. Currently, we love Maris Apartments that overlooks the seaside. This luxury apartment is available for rent and is equipped with a large kitchen, beautiful living room and balcony. Staying here isn’t cheap, but sometimes you need to treat yourself and this place certainly does that. Egmond itself is a nice town with shops and cafes, worth taking a look at.
Bergen aan Zee
If you want to stay the night, continue your route to Bergen aan Zee, where this journey ends. And it’s probably the best place to do so because this region is absolutely stunning. Surrounded by forest and dunes, you can totally relax here. Our hotel tip is Blooming Hotel. They offer 128 spacious rooms with most of them overlooking the garden or nearby forest. All rooms feature a CocoMat mattress, giving you the feeling of nature. The beach is a 15 minute bicycle ride, which you can rent at the hotel. Due to Covid-19 Blooming Beach, their beach bar, is closed but make sure to visit next season.
