One positive thing about the whole Covid situation, is that people come up with the most innovative ideas, also in the travel branche. This undoubtedly applies to Willem Megens. To overcome his declining revenues from the sale of restored vintage cars, the Amsterdam resident decided to merge his two passions – travel and vehicles – into a new concept in the camping holiday market: an indoor campsite.
Outside Inn was born, and a real campsite in an empty building in Amsterdam was a fact. With a variety of fully renovated vintage caravans and beach houses with newly built-in beds and super-deluxe mattresses!
From Caravans to Beach Houses
In addition to caravans, there are also five sleek and in modern colours painted beach houses with beach sand in front of the door, and for romantics there is a Pipo de Clown car to book. “Here you don’t have to walk to a dingy sanitary room with a toilet roll under your arm in the rain, we offer a brand new and ultra-modern shower and toilet room,” says Megens. To enhance the camping effect, the entire area is provided with artificial grass and each accommodation has its own seating area in front of the door. Just around the corner you” find a metro station, which takes you to Nieuwmarkt and Central Station in 10 to 15 minutes.
1000 m² indoor camping
To give you an idea, the industrial design in the old company building with a surface area of 1000 m² has been largely kept intact. For example, the concrete columns and the roof with skylights have been preserved. As an eye-catcher, an old hippie caravan has been placed on the roof above the Outside Inn entrance, as well as a new air-conditioning system to ensure a fresh, safe and healthy indoor climate. Glamping has never been so comfortable!
Vintage caravan, new bed
Anyone who sees the sleek caravans, will not realize that the majority were very old and very dilapidated models that have completely been stripped and refurbished. “An additional advantage was that it also allowed me to install custom-made double beds to create the perfect place to sleep,” says Megens. In the basement a completely new wet room has been built with luxury sanitary facilities including underfloor heating.
Facilities at Outside Inn
So what can you expect once installed? Firstly, Free Wi-Fi is available (very important) and there are sockets in every accommodation. Guests can store valuables in a private locker if they wish. Next to that, a separate room in the basement has been transformed into a relaxation area with comfortable armchairs, a fridge with soft drinks and a beer tap! You cal also bring your own drinks there. Furthermore, you can also rent bicycles – including electric ones – to explore the city center or the surrounding meadows. Outside Inn has various cycling routes available and information about sights in Amsterdam. Guests can also choose from 3 breakfast options for €9.50 pp. Good news for those arriving with their own car: parking in front of the door is free of charge on weekends and during the week after 6 p.m!
