15 Jul KASTAN HOOFDDORP – AN OASIS IN THE CITY
KASTAN is Hoofddorp’s latest hotspot – created by the founders of the popular De DAKKAS in Haarlem (find our favorite lunch-spots in Haarlem here). This isn’t just another restaurant, it’s a project that started as a crowdfunding, and has been realized to create a lively place.
About KASTAN
It all started with an opportunity to bring in new ideas for Hoofddorp – Here people could contribute ideas about the future and enlivening the area between the station and the center of Hoofddorp. Architect and hospitality entrepreneur Gijs de Waal participated and saw possibilities for a restaurant. As co-initiator of Hanneke’s Boom and BRET at Sloterdijk station in Amsterdam, De Waal has experience in setting up special hospitality concepts in special places. In 2018 he met Haarlem hospitality entrepreneurs Dennis de Waart and Jeroen Spek – and the idea for KASTAN was born.
Named after the many chestnut trees in the garden (Kastanje bomen), and the 3 living trees under the roof of the building. KASTAN will offer delicious, local and pure food and drink. For its menu, KASTAN is inspired by the Dutch polder and its agricultural history.
Sustainability and recycled
KASTAN has been re-built from an old shed/barn that dates back from the early 19th Century. When it was for sale for just 1 euro, just North of Hoofddorp, the founders of KASTAN saw an opportunity. They carefully took the shed apart, numbering the construction poles, so its frame and structure could remain. Because its location had many trees, they’ve kept the healthy ones, and built the restaurant around them, pretty cool! Next to that, they don’t use gas, and electricity will be used at a minimum even though solar panels aren’t possible due to the shadow of the surrounding trees.

Needless to say that everything here is approached with sustainability in the mind. Meaning, as much seasonable, local and organic as possible. We loved the seasonal salad with pink and yellow beetroots, very filling! But if you crave a burger with “resposible” meat by Dubbeldoel, you’re also good here. There are a few kid-friendly options such as French toast with berries.
What we love: KASTAN is for the people by the people. High volume and earning cash isn’t why this place was created. The food is very nutritious and delicious. We love the outside terrace, the many windows, and the living trees inside. Go check it out.
