KING’S DAY 2021 | THINGS TO DO

Like last year, it was decided that King’s Day, as we know it, was cancelled due to the corona crisis. It wouldn’t be safe and everybody understood. At the same time, many people were disappointed not to be celebrating a cheerful day that is usually the highlight of the year in the Netherlands.

With this in mind, the Royal Association of Oranjevereniging (KBOV) has just presented an alternative program to celebrate King’s Day 2021 on 27th April in times of social distancing.

An Alternative King’s Day in 2021

It has been decided that this special day should not pass unnoticed. Therefore, last year a different kind of celebrating under the theme “Woningsdag” had been appointed. This year, the Dutch King and his family will visit the city of Eindhoven, but without the crowds. If you have a Dutch flag, hang it outside your house, paint your cheeks orange and decorate the house!

To begin with Church Bells will ring across the Netherlands between 9:55 AM and 10AM on the April 27th. To congratulate the King, but also as a token of togetherness. At 10AM the Dutch National Anthem can be sang by all, and a special broadcast on Dutch television will showcase this across the Netherlands.

Music by The Streamers

Several Dutch musicians and artists are going to perform on King’s Day from Carre and finally at Soestdijk Palace via a livestream. Tickets are free but you can donate if you want. These artist consist out of the biggest Dutch artists in the Netherlands from Snelle, Nick & Simon, Paul de Leeuw, Maan, Miss Montreal and many more! thelivestreamers.nl

Creative idea’s on King’s Day 2021

After announcing an alternative King’s Day this year, more and more people have come up with creative solutions to celebrate. For instance, you can still join in with the traditional Dutch games such as “koekhappen”, Sing alongs and at Vondelpark Live, kids can showcase their talents. Dancing, singing, playing an instrument, you name it. Do you have a creative idea for King’s Day 2020? Check the website Wij Amsterdam an enter!

Food Walk in Amsterdam

In honour of King Willem-Alexander’s birthday, THE ENTOURAGE GROUP organizes ‘The Royal Walk’. A culinary city walk along all locations, each with its own composed menu. While enjoying a delicious culinary dish and a matching cocktail, you will continue the tour to one of the following locations. The tour can start from any restaurant from 12:00 to 20:00.

It is not necessary to purchase a ‘ticket’ in advance. At the restaurant where you start, you will be handed a ‘Royal ticket’, which will help you to complete the tour. Make sure to visit all six locations and you might win an ENTOURAGE prize. To enter the draw, submit the card at your last stop.

National Toast

Eventually, the day ends at 4.30pm with a so-called National Toast. People across the Netherlands can simultaneously raise their glasses on the 54th birthday of the King. But maybe we can also raise our glasses to ourselves and our loved ones to let each other know that we are doing well and we will get though this, where ever you are in the world.

Distantly yours,

Wander-Lust
