04 Jan MONNICKENDAM TRAVEL GUIDE
Monnickendam is nestled in between Volendam, Marken and Amsterdam. this idyllic destination is tiny, but attracts travelers with their cobblestone streets, centuries-old architecture, scenic waterfront, and well preserved buildings.
Monnickendam in a nutshell
As soon as you walk in the town of Monnickendam, you realize that this is probably what the timeless allure of Dutch life and heritage looks like. We love the fact that most houses have large windows that invite you to take a glimpse inside. What you see is stunning architecture, brick walls with details of previous centuries. Don’t forget to look up though, the rooftops of many historic homes throughout the town showcase impressive Dutch designs.
WHERE TO STAY
For us, there is one clear tip when it comes to staying in Monnickendam; Fortuna Spinoza. Now, there are more options nevertheless – but will it be so great as this accommodation tip? We think not. A little introduction.
Fortuna Spinoza
This 17-century villa is surrounded by old merchant houses and warehouses that give the town its charm. Owners Babette and Niels, fell in love with the villa resulting in Fortuna Spinoza, which opened its doors in 2022. It was transformed into a luxury adults-only bed & breakfast, where you can stay from 170 euros per night, including a beautiful breakfast. In total you can pick between 3 luxury rooms located on the 2nd floor, all with luxurious bathrooms. We ourselves slept in the Hubris room – where the en-suite with marble and gold features. The four-poster bed, antique paintings, curtains and small details all fit perfectly with the atmosphere of the centuries-old villa.
The lady of the house Babette, provides a luxurious and varied breakfast from her country kitchen, and if you are lucky, the fireplace is crackling. Be sure to walk outside, too, as the garden invites you to take a seat with a freshly squeezed orange juice in the summer months. A fourth residence with spa will likely be built there in the future. We’ve included Fortuna Spinoza in our book 110 Bijzondere Bestemmingen. Book your stay here.

Surroundings Monnickendam
Recharge and visit the surrounding towns of Edam, Volendam, Broek in Waterland, and our favourite gem Theetuin Overleek is just around the corner.
Hemmeland
This recreational area is a wonderful place to walk or cycle to from the town of Monnickendam. You can swim or windsurf on the Gauwsea, or relax at beach bar StrandVier.
Bootverhuur Overleek
By far one of our favourite gems in the Netherlands! They’ve recently changed their name and you can only eat lunch here if you rent a boat. It will make the place less busy, so more of an exclusive visit. Lunch is healthy and amazing, but the views are even better. You can rent a silent boat with friends and explore the Dutch countryside – bring a picnic!
Volendam
This famous Dutch town needs no introduction. Swamped by tourists or not, Volendam remains a lovely place to visit for the afternoon. You can rent bicycles or E-chopper, and explore the surrounding towns Marken or Edam.
