04 Feb SAIL AMSTERDAM 2025 – what to expect
Every four years Amsterdam welcomes more than 10.000 ships and vessels in the city, when SAIL Amsterdam 2025 arrives. This time it will be even bigger, having to cancel the last SAIL back when the pandemic was still a thing. Besides watching the ships arrive, there are a lot of things to see and do. We’ve listed down what to expect from SAIL Amsterdam 2025.
When is SAIL Amsterdam 2025?
SAIL Amsterdam is held between the 20th and 24th of August 2025. The main event will take place in the harbor of Amsterdam, located on the eastside of Amsterdam – not far from Central Station. Good news because SAIL Amsterdam has free entrance for everyone! SAIL 2025 marks a triple anniversary: the 750th anniversary of our capital city, 50 years of SAIL, and the 10th edition of the largest free-access event in the Netherlands.
There are some events or special activities that costs money, but they will be listed and can be booked online.
Where can I watch the ships arrive?
The first event at SAIL Amsterdam is the arrival of the many and impressive ships. There are plenty of good spots along the water to watch, but we advise you not to only focus on Amsterdam, but to stand somewhere where it’s less crowded. Here are some of the best spots to watch the ships arrive:
- IJmuiden (see the ships come in at the harbor)
- Houtrijk (this secret spot has an amazing outlook from above!)
- Amsterdam Central station
As a finale, after the 5-day SAIL event on and around the IJ from 11 am till 8 pm. The tall ships will sail from Amsterdam back towards the North Sea on Sunday 24 August during the official SAIL-Out.
