07 Sep SAMOS GREECE | THE BEST HIDDEN GEMS
Samos is one of the bigger islands in Greece, that you can easily reach from the Turkish seaside. This makes Samos a favor holiday destination, and it can get quite busy. We travelled to Samos during the high-season in August, and still managaed to find a few hidden gems. Some are lesser known, less crowded, or mainly visited by the locals.
HIDDEN GEMS ON SAMOS
When exploring these hidden gems on Samos, it’s a good idea to rent a car or scooter, as some of these places are off the beaten path and may not be easily accessible otherwise. Additionally, know that visiting these spots during spring or early autumn can provide a more tranquil experience, as the island is less crowded. For all hidden spots applies the same unwritten rule; come early (before 11am) and you may have the whole place to yourself. Enjoy exploring!
Mikró Seïtáni beach, Karlovasi
While Karlovasi is one of the larger towns on the island, it’s often overlooked by tourists who head to the more touristy Pythagorion or Samos Town. Sure, the harbour doens’t look so appealing, but Karlovasi has a beautiful hidden gem; Mikro Seitani beach. The only way to get there is by foot or boat, and it will take you about 1 hour to hike there. The trees make the walk quite easy, even during the hot season. Make sure to wear seankers and no flipflops! After reaching the top of the beach, you will most likely be the only one, or one of few people. Walk 45 further and you’ll reach the bigger megalo Seitani beach. Bring sunscreen, a towel and enough water, because this beach is natural without any umbrella’s or beach bars.
Manolates
This charming mountain village is nestled in the hills of Samos and offers a picturesque setting with cobblestone streets, traditional architecture, and stunning views of the surrounding countryside. You can explore its artisan shops, enjoy a meal in a local taverna, or take a leisurely walk through the scenic surroundings.
Pleiades Apartments
This hotel doesn’t have a wesbite, so we discovered this one by chance, by looking on Google maps and discovered many 5 star reviews, but only a Greek telephone nr. You can book it via Elisa Was Here, but only in combination with flights. We found this place After an extensive search, I managed to find them on good old FB (do people still use this?), and I started chatting with the kind owner Emanuelle. She took over the place from her parents and she gave up her teaching job in Athens, to run Pleiades.
It offers 10 apartments that include a kitchen, living room and spacious bedrooms. Additionally, they have an amazing poolside, and bar area. Breakfast can be served upon request (they use their own eggs and fruit from the garden!). It’s close to sandy beach Psili Ammos and Votsalakia village, but at Pleiades you will really feel hidden and secluded, a big tip!
Fournaki Beach
Not far from Pleiades Apartments, you drive (or walk) down a path which many visitors miss. Downstairs you will find a beach bar called Mocambo Beach Bar, the only place next to Fournaki Beach. Umbrella’s and beds are free, as long as you order something. What really surperised us was the quality of food at this little beach bar. Fresh fish, tasty salads but also fresh herbs I saw being picked from the garden. TIP: bring some watershoes, as it’s a pebble stone beach. Check our reel to get an impression!

Lemonakia Beach
While some of Samos’ beaches can get crowded during peak tourist season, Lemonakia Beach tends to be quieter. That being said, there are 2 different sides and entrances to this beach – of which the left side is more serene and visited by the locals more. Both sides have a restaurant, but again, on the left-side you have a more traditional restaurant with amazing food, overlooking the seaside, and there is a little playground for kids (which is falling apart, so enter at your own risk). It’s a beautiful spot with crystal-clear waters and lush surroundings. It’s also a great place for snorkeling. We loved spending our last day in Samos here.
Orizontas – Platanos
If you crave something else than moussaka or Greek salad, come to this restaurant nesteled on top of a mountain in Platanos village. Once a traditional taverna, the restaurant had a big transformation when the daughter of the original owner took over. She did well, because Orizontas a true gem on Samos, but you have to know about it! Wine, really good fresh food, and a stunning view, where you can see the sun set behind the mountain, is a recipe for success. Walk up the street, and find a little square with a few Greek taverna’s and cafés, nothing fancy, but cute and traditional.
