Bardak » Tel Aviv in the heart of Amsterdam

Have you ever eaten ‘Grilled Okra’? At Bardak, near The Heineken Experience in Amsterdam, you can discover the taste of the Israeli kitchen.

The place is a organized chaos and that’s exactly the vibe they want to create in the restaurant. Get ready for some extraordinary tapas. The owners want to give you the real Israeli experience. You’ll get the real local foods on your table like ‘Burnt Eggplant’. I personally didn’t like the taste but it was nice to try it out. The ‘Grilled Okra’ is a real favourite. Not something you can order everywhere but very tasty and definitely worth trying.

This is the real deal

For the meat-lovers: Arais. This is a signature dish of the restaurant. Juicy lamb shish kabob in a crusty pita… The pita absorbed all the fat of the lamb which makes this dish very tasteful. If it’s too heavy you can always share it with your friends, you’ll get 4 sliced pieces. Room for dessert is very important, you don’t want to miss the ‘Honey Yoghurt’. Sounds simple, but it’s very appetizing.

Tel Aviv!

In Israel there’s a town named: Tel Aviv. (I’m sure you’ve all heard of it) The walls here are the canvas of many street artists, it’s (like Bardak) an organised mess. So I guess the name Bardak which means ‘organized chaos’, makes total sense. The restaurant is designed by Sheryl Leysner. She recreated the Tel Aviv style in the restaurant by some graffiti walls, pieces of bricks and corrugated sheets. In Tel Aviv you’ll find the best Israeli restaurants hidden in badly maintained market stables. In Amsterdam you’ll find Bardak in the heart of Amsterdam, De Pijp. The restaurant is open 7 days a week!

Cocktails you’ll have to try

In this cosy restaurant you can also enjoy some of the best cocktails in town for only 8 to 9 euro. Especially the Granny Smith Martini is a very luxury drink of high quality for this price. Made with fresh pressed apple juice, vodka and lime. So if you’re looking for some new acquired tastes, try the Israeli tapas here. You’ll be surprised!

The Birdhouse Amsterdam

Hip hip hooray summer is in the city: the sun is shining (and luckily isn’t going to stop with it), lots of smiling faces in urban parks, and a variety of birds which bring a colourful joy to Amsterdam. Our beautiful capital city in optima forma, thanks good-humoured Mother Nature! Not to mention all the new food kids in town, the hospitality industry don’t know a so called ‘cucumber season’. This time I visited The Birdhouse, almost my neighbours, or in WK football terms ‘a home match’. Definitely one of my new favourite spots in town, let’s have a look!

The urban design jungle
Sometimes my expectations aren’t sky high before I drop by a new restaurant. Mostly it’s because of what was settled there before. I had that with The Birdhouse, situated in the Lancaster hotel. It always didn’t look very vibrant, it didn’t invite me to drop by. But since a couple of months my interest has been aroused with the arrival of this picture-perfect restaurant. Expect a really stylish restaurant with a lot of different kind of cosy corners, and detail-oriented. Overall, they’ve used natural materials to highlight the hotspot background: The Birdhouse is inspired by the bird gardens of Artis, their neighbours across the street. The outdoors has been brought inside, thumbs up!

The Birdhouse for all plumage
Whether you’re an early bird or a night owl, this restaurant will become in no time one of your new faves, mark my words. Breakfast bowls, savory toasts, birdhouse cocktails, every day all day long. I’ve been here for brunch / lunch on a Sunday morning, and it was one of my best hospitality experiences of 2018. I hear you think: Why? It’s the total package of genuine, welcoming staff (especially Luc, he’s born to do this), a stunning atmosphere and finger lickin’ good (looking) food. Yassss jackpot! I guess the pictures speak for themselves, no explanation needed.

The Maker Café, unlimited coffee in Amsterdam

You may have heard of the Maker Café, in de Hallen passage in Amsterdam. A wonderful store where local craftsmen and talented creators showcase and sell their products. But only a small amount of people know the Maker Café, that is located on the top floor. We checked it out and ordered a cup of (pretty amazing) coffee.

You could easily miss it, the Maker Café. They’ve been here since last september though and it’s time that more people took notice. Why? Well, for one, the coffee is good. Very good. They are using Rotterdam-based Manhattan roasters coffee beans, that created a special Maker Café blend for Amsterdam. You see? Both cities can go hand in hand! The coffee combined with the rich and creamy Queens of Dairy, creates one of the best cappuccinos you’ve tasted in Amsterdam. Yep, I dare to say it. The barista’s behind the counter and well trained and also serve amazing filter coffee, if that’s your thing.

The interior is all available to buy and created by talented craftsmen that are connected to the Maker Store. From chairs, to tables and even the art on the walls. With a touch of pastel pink, the Maker Café is a comfortable place for a quiet sit down after a stroll over the Ten Katemarket or foodhallen, which are just around the corner. There is room to sit down around 20 people, so it’s not big, but it’s good enough.

Free Coffee!
To top it all off, and perhaps best of all, the Maker Café offers a monthly coffee subscription, that is just too good to pass. It works like this; You buy a monthly description and for the entire month you can order and drink as many coffees or tea as you’d like. A subscription cost €35,- per month, but for your first month is only €25,-! If you drink 1 coffee a day,  (and you’re in the hood) you save at least..well, you can do the math right? If that’s still a bit much for you, you can also opt for a stampcard and receive a free drink when it’s full.

See you there?

‘Pink is not a color, it’s an attitude’

The menu at Mama Kelly is simple. Chicken or Lobster, or both! Okok, they will offer some extra’s but these are the signature dishes you can expect. The interior is something that you will see a lot of across Instagram these coming months. It’s pink and bloggers love anything pink right? Let’s hope for Mama Kelly that the hype will last but if we look at the other location, this won’t be a problem whatsoever.
