5 x New Hotspots in Amsterdam for January

I compare Amsterdam to New York and London sometimes because there are so many new places that open up these days, it’s almost impossible to keep track of. Here are 5 new hotspots in Amsterdam that are all open or opening this month!

Sticky Fingers
Coffee, cakes and bites and it’s as simple as that. Sticky Fingers is a place where you will run into a lot of bloggers because it’s very Instagramable. (is that a word?) It’s new on the Amstelveenseweg near the famous Vondelpark so perfect for a break after a walk. The interior is pretty cool because they have a white wall where they molded in some recycled furniture. Amsteveenseweg 3, Amsterdam, www.stickyfingers.nl

Stach at the Overtoom
Stach is a wonderful food and drink store with several franchises around the city but a few days ago they’ve opened a new store on the Overtoom. They will prepare different kinds of healthy foods like  Poke Bowls, Poke Salads, Sushi, Sushi salads, Springrolls and Vietnamese streetfood. Besides all that, they also sell lot’s of ingredients, ready to go meals, chocolate, cookies, healthy bars, coffee and more. I’m glad this store is closer to my home now and I will visit them soon! Lavinia 2
Another very tasty and healthy hotspot that we love! Lavinia 2 is also located on the Amstelveenseweg (new hotspots in Amsterdam galore here?) but a bit closer towards Hoofddorpplein. Lavinia is serving homemade meals and cakes that are all organic. They offer catering and attract all sorts of people that a a little conscious about their health. Like the first Lavinia in the Kerkstraat, you can hire the place for private events in the evening and they also host a number of events. Amstelveenseweg 192, Amsterdam, Website

Libertine Cafe Cafe
Another trick out of box of the biggest food and drink entrepreneur in Amsterdam; Casper Reinders. He recently also opened restaurants Bo Nam and Blue Boy and he just added Libertine Cafe Cafe. They describe themselves as “a place for locals and wanderers alike”. Sounds like us! Situated in central Amsterdam’s 9 streets, it’s a perfect location to say the least. Come here for all day breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks. Wolvenstraat 22, Amsterdam, Facebook

De Biertuin Prinsengracht
A beer garden in the middle of Amsterdam? Yep, it’s happening. Well, it’s a second location but the first one was in East so a bit far for some residents and visitors. This one is located on the spot where BoCinq used to be. It’s near the Leidsestreet so very easy to reach. They will serve a lot of beers, burgers (also veggie), sausages, salads, chips if you have to believe it, a great atmosfeer! They will open this month is all preparations go to plan. Prinsengracht 494, Amsterdam, Facebook

Vascobelo’s V-Bar is more than just coffee

Coffee and Tea, we all love it. It’s a culture that’s been imprinted in our lives since we know it. I can drink tea all day and I love one cup of coffee during the day. (with soy milk because I can’t handle the espresso yet). With that said, I couldn’t refuse the offer to experience a tea tasting morning at the newly opened V-Bar on Stadionplein.

V-Bar

Vascobelo
is a Belgian coffee brand that’s been around since 1998 and evolved in Antwerpen where you will find the world’s largest coffee port. After a long successful coffee-selling period, Vascobelo decided to open their first V-Bar back in 2015. At the moment you can find 6 of those spread over Antwerp, Haarlem, Eindhoven and Amsterdam who has 3 locations. The interior of the V-bar is elegant yet comfortable. Maybe it’s because they build and created their own bookshelves and tables or maybe it’s because their CEO inspired them with his sense of design, the same type that you will find at the home of the founding family De Roeck in Antwerp. The AD Newspaper (a prominent newspaper in the Netherlands) recently voted their coffee the 3rd best in the Netherlands! Things are going well. But not many people know that there’s is more to the V-Bar than just coffee. Besides the very taste coffee beans, they also serve a wonderful breakfast and lunch menu plus a delicious set of tea’s from Theodor.

The Story of Tea
China and Japan are the trendsetters when it comes to tea. The Europeans discovered it and took it back with them and the world was all about tea before coffee even came to mind. But what is tea exactly? You’ll be surprised if I told you that the stuff you buy in your local supermarket isn’t the real deal. Especially the “tea” with flavors are full of added sugars and additives to give you a certain flavor. So if you think you’re being healthy, you’re basically drinking hot lemonade.. Crazy right? Well, at Vascobelo’s V-Bar you can enjoy real tea leaves with natural flavors where nothing needs to be added.

Did You Know?
» That Rooibos isn’t a tea? It’s actually a herb from South Africa
» Green Tea naturally contains a lot of caffeine
» Never add boiling water onto your tea leaves. Leave it for a minute or 2 after boiling before poring it.

Enough reason to visit the newly opened V-Bar at Stadionplein in Amsterdam. And who knows, you might choose a cup of real tea over their amazing coffee!

Looiedet Coffee & Toast in Amsterdam New West

I live outside the “ring” in Amsterdam which means I don’t live in the center but this doesn’t mean there isn’t anything to do around here! I live in Amsterdam new west and I’m happily surprised to see new cafe’s, restaurants and shops opening up by the month. So has Looiedet Coffee & Toast.

Even though they’ve been open for weeks now, I had never heard from this cool lunchroom yet. It all started with the motorcycle lessons school. They used the space to fix bikes and it quickly became a hangout for friends, family and acquaintances. So why not expand right? The result was a place to book your motorcycle lessons, a barbershop, a vintage bike store and a coffee/lunch bar. The perfect combination for people on the go that enjoy coffee and a simple but tasty meal. On the menu you can choose out of 15 different toasts from mozzarella with pesto to banana and nutella.

Looiedet Coffee & Toast
The original toasts as we know it

Looiedet Coffee & Toast recently invested in the king of coffee machines and even held a party to celebrate it. The Sanremo Opera is the best technical coffee machine out there and you can really taste the purity of the beans after it’s roasted and pressed into your cup. The only downside is that they don’t serve soy milk so that’s a shame for the peeps that have an intolerance to milk. Maybe this is a sneaky hint..? Besides coffee they also serve delicious leaf tea’s and with that the occasional cakes or scones.

Looiedet Coffee & Toast
The king of the coffee machines is ready for you!

The building has a very nice industrial look and feel and looks like a place where hip Amsterdam would normally sit. However, the owner told me: “we like to keep this place low key and gain customers by word of mouth. Bike lovers, men with beards and people who enjoy good coffee and a killer toasty are at the right address here. “Everything we serve is Halal too so whether you own a bike or not, everybody is welcome!” In the store you will find jeans, shirts and cool vintage biker stuff while upstairs the men can get their  beard pimped. If you’re an early bird, you can get a coffee for just 2 euros until 10am.

Barber shop Looiedet
Hair did. Beard did.

For me it’s just around the corner but even if you’re not in the neighborhood, this place is definitely worth the extra bicycle (or motorcycle) ride!

Hotspot in Utrecht » The Village

I was born in Utrecht, a vibrant student city in the middle of The Netherlands.
People call it small Amsterdam but locals would prefer to call their city a cozy medieval old town with canals, monuments and a good university.
I moved to Amsterdam about 7 years ago but I love coming back to Utrecht when I get the chance. Lot’s of new restaurants (especially for great lunch) and coffee bars are popping up by the month. There’s one place I had never been before even though they already have 3 locations. I’m talking about The Village.

The village Utrecht
Coffee in all sorts

The village has been around for a couple of years already so it’s not the newest hotspot but certainly one of the coolest. Like mentioned before, they have 3 locations of which one is located in the old jail of Utrecht. Pretty cool right?
At this location they also serve lunch and dinner but what makes them extra special is the in-house bakery and distillery.
Once every fortnight, they offer a 5 course meal for 37,50 with a theme that changes every now and then.

“Music is an important part of the Village with several music events on their calendar and art on their walls”

The Village at the wolvenplein is located in an old jail.

The other locations are in the voorstraat which is pretty central and a popular hangout for coffee and music lovers.
Tip » It’s great for coffee and relax with friends but not the best place to work as they don’t offer WIFI.

Their 3rd location is at the science park which is a little bit more out of town.
Music is an important part of the Village with several music events on their calendar and art on their walls. (which you can buy!)
They have even won the title for the best coffee bar of Utrecht 2013 so that’s something they can be proud of.

4. The Attendant in London, England

This coffee bar used to be a Victorian toilet, built around 1890 and mothballed in the 1960’s. It might feel a little strange to drink your coffee where people used to take a leek but hey, it’s certainly a very innovating way of creating one of the most talked about coffee bars in England! http://www.the-attendant.com/
