Obsession » The Pillow Room

What began with a trip through India and across Asia, resulted in a beautiful pillow collection. Creative director Sanne Poot was decorating her house in Singapore when she came up with the idea. She couldn’t find any nice pillows that suited her new house so she decided to make her own. She got so many positive reactions on it, that she decided to start The Pillow Room.

It certainly helped that Sanne has a background in fashion. She used to work for fashion brand Love Stories. Her love for fashion and style really shows in her first pillow collection. All the pillows are handmade in India and each pillow takes around 8 hours to make. Sanne makes sure her pillows are created by carefully checked factories, so she makes sure that no child labour and bad conditions apply. This is one of her main objectives. “we visited all our factories to make sure nothing shady is going on, this is extremely important to us”

Loving this colorful design!

Top 5 Secret Spots in Amsterdam

I love discovering places in my hometown that are a little under the radar. But then again, I like these places because they are quiet and not over popular. For this reason I had to think twice before writing this article. But we started this blog not to keep the best things for ourselves but to share them with the world so here we go. These are the top 5 secret spots in Amsterdam!

1. De Cantina
Word of mouth or a bicycle ride takes you to this secret spot in Amsterdam West. I live far into west Amsterdam so for me it was only a matter of time before I discovered De Cantina. This place is amazing. They serve coffee, cake, homemade lemonade and sandwiches with ingredients from their own garden or local produce. Nothing major but it’s the location and use of space that makes this secret spot worth mentioning. De Cantina is situated in between the “1800 roerden” an creative area where artists work. De Cantina is also part of “Het Rijk van de Keizer” which is a location that can be used for weddings, parties and dinners. You can lay in the sunshine deck on a fatboy, hammock or chill in an old car wreck. Find a spot in the shade under umbrella’s tucked away in between the trees. Don’t be surprised if you see chickens walking around, this is normal! So grab your bike and head for some peace and quiet!

2. Bar Porem
This secret bar is so cool that we have to tell you about it! If you live in Amsterdam, you may have heard of a restaurant called Gheisa. It’s one of the best places for sushi and Asian fusion cuisine. On the way to the toilet was a large space that wasn’t used in the most effective way. A big shame because that space had great potential! When 2 friends from Amsterdam heard this, they didn’t have to think long about what to do with it. Both experienced cocktail shakers, they decided to create a typical Amsterdam Cocktail bar with a menu inspired by some of Amsterdam’s most famous characters such as Johan Cruyf and Andre Hazes. The wall is decorated with framed pictures and classic bottles. The interior is brown yet stylish and there are around 6 tables to sit at. Bar Porem isn’t so easy to find. No, you need to check the door closely and ring the left doorbell for someone to open. and ssst, don’t tell just anybody about this place.

3. Hotel de Windketel
This tiny hotel is right in the middle of Amsterdam, yet nobody realizes it’s a place where you can spend the night at. It’s a freestanding octagonal brick tower and was built in 1897 as part of Amsterdam’s water works. Most buildings like that get destroyed but not this one. It now features as a luxury apartment for 2 equipped with a bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and living space. The nice part is, that it’s in a really nice quiet area of Amsterdam, but only a 10 minute walk from the Jordaan. It’s not the cheapest option (325 for 2 nights) but certainly the best kept secret when it comes to hotels! Perfect for a romantic getaway..

4. ‘T Nieuwe Diep
If you know your way into East Amsterdam, you may have heard of this secret spot that is hidden in the Flevopark. Nevertheless, it’s always worth a visit. At ‘T Nieuwe Diep, you can feast your taste buds because they have their own distillery and organic produce. Yes, they serve coffee and tea but they are most famous for their cider, gin, liqueur and bitters. (don’t know it? try it!) There is a patio over the water and although the crowd isn’t as hip and happening as in other places, this is perfect for a relaxing moment in Amsterdam. During summer, the’re open from 3pm till 8pm Mon-Sun.

5. Theehuis De Aker
This tea house is right next door to where I live. Next to the water where you can make your way up to the Amsterdam Forest or towards the road to Amsterdam’s nearest beach, Zandvoort. It used to be an old waterpump mill that was used to dry the ground back in the 19th century. I love this place because they collaborate with non-profit foundation the Vrije Geer, so people with a disability can work a few hours a day and serve you coffee, tea, cakes and lunch. The Aker mill has been restored a few times and is the only remaining hydraulic engineering work between Halfway and Amstelveen.

So there you have it, 5 secret spots in Amsterdam that you may not have heard of. No, these spots are here for you to enjoy some peace and quiet in a hectic city like Amsterdam.

How to prepare your body for travel (inside out!)

It doesn’t matter whether your a woman or a man, we all want to look and feel great while we walk over the beach.
I say look and FEEL, because it’s also extremely important to turn the workmode OFF and put the chillmode ON.
In this blogpost I will talk about how to prepare your body for your holiday on the inside out.

Look great
Ok, we all know that this is not going to happen overnight, BUT, you can do a lot in a few weeks.
Work out: Boring but true. Get your ass to the gym already! Build it up slowly. Don’t kill yourself for 2 weeks because your body needs some time to get into it.
Eat right: Try to eat a little different. Cut down on pasta’s, rice and bread but do not stop eating! Eat small amounts 6 times daily instead of big meals 3 times a day. Breakfast is key here. Try buckwheat banana pancakes instead of sweet cornflakes and eat good fats like avocado’s. I swear by these because they make your skin look great and believe it or not, they actually break down fat in your body.
Skin prep: Start to prepare your face and body for the sunshine. There are a few things you can do;
Scrub. Buy a good scrub like the exfoliating scrub from Dermalogica (When you buy these products, always check if it doesn’t contain palm oil) Repeat this twice a week depending on how sensitive your skin is. For your face you can use Foreo daily (without a scrub product) Just use some cleansing foam and enjoy your soft cheeks afterwards.
Finish your showers with cold water. Put the shower on the hardest setting are circulate it onto your legs, bum, thighs, belly and even your upper body. This is great for your blood circulation and it helps your body break down the fat.
After the cold shower you need to rub yourself dry. Keep that blood circulated! Finish by massaging your bodymilk onto your skin. Always use a facecream that contains SPF.

Feel great
This is about cleansing your body before you get into chill mode and try weird foods and drink more alcohol than you would normally drink.

For this I use the 3 day cleanse from the Juicebrothers.

Processed with VSCO with hb1 preset

I had never done a cleanse before so this was going to be interesting. Here is my diary in short:
Day 1 » Starting off with a ginger shot which is quite heavy! I open the next bottle straight away and sip the master cleanse which has a bit of Cajun spice into it.
I always work out at the gym on Mondays so this cleanse is not going to stop me. I work out for about 45 minutes as I don’t want to push it.
It surprises me that I can function without food. All the minerals and vitamins keep me not feeling hungry. I go out for a meeting with Sarah and at around 4pm I notice that I can’t concentrate that well anymore. Time to head back home and finish the last 3 juices. Vanilla sky is by far my favorite! (almond milk, coconut sugar, vanilla powder, Himalayan salt) Yummie, I wish the whole bunch was like this one.

cleanse your body

Day 2 » I wake up and my tummy feels flat (hurrah!) but I’feel pretty good. I don’t even feel like having breakfast. (this is normally very important for me)
I start off with the ginger shot again and I have decided I really don’t like this one! It’s very heavy and sharp but it sure does get my tummy working so that’s good.
The whole day was pretty good but I cheated in the afternoon by ordering a smooth vegetable soup. I had a lunch meeting with Sarah (yes, again) and seeing everybody eating was just too much for me! (sorry Juicebrothers) BUT, it was a small soup and I didn’t cheat for the rest of the day..

Day 3 » I’m happy I’ve gotten this far so I’m determent to end my cleanse perfectly. My body feels like it can handle it so for the 3rd day I will use the deepest cleanse. This time I start off with a wheatgrass shot which is a lot softer and tastier! I feel energized and I workout for about 30 minutes before running off to an appointment. I don’t even think of food at this point and it’s only when my stomach starts to rumble that I realize I need to take my next juice.

Verdict: It’s all in the mind. My body was doing fine and I wasn’t hungry. It was my mind that kept playing games with me. (I thought about pretty much every food craving that’s out there) I feel ready for my trip. Energized and healthy. My cold that was coming up, disappeared and I feel more comfortable in my bikini.
I don’t own a scale but I can see that I’ve lost a little weight. I know this cleanse is not suppose to be a diet but it surly feels good!
