ĂnĂn Saigon » Vietnamese Streetfood in Utrecht

Walking into ĂnĂn, you are instantly hit with the smells and colours of a busy side street in Saigon… or in Utrecht! The vibe is alive and the place is dotted with wait staff running between tables and the kitchen carrying steaming little plates of mouth-watering Vietnamese treats.

On top of the tables are typical of what you would find in a local Vietnamese eatery – colourful plastic trays filled with sauces, chop sticks and napkins. The chairs are also in style – bamboo. We are told that AnAn in Vietnamese means ‘eat eat’. Yes please.

ĂnĂn Utrecht

ĂnĂn literally means Eat Eat

The menu is impressive with so much to choose from. The small dishes are designed to share (something all Asians like to do) and 2 to 4 dishes are equal to a full meal. And let’s all put our hands together for their extensive choice of vegetarian and vegan dishes too.

ĂnĂn Vietnamese Streetfood

The food starts to come out and it smells amazing. The vegetables are fresh and the broths and sauces are salty and sweet, leaving a warm feeling in the throat. They have a selection of ‘Banh Hoi’ – roll it yourself dishes. The ingredients are crunchy and when put together, the aroma and taste of that first bite are so good. The great thing about Vietnamese cuisine (besides the prices) is that because the dishes are so light, there is always room to sample more. The duck curry is a power house and rocks our taste buds, as is the udon dumpling soup with vegetables.

ĂnĂn Saigon » Vietnamese Streetfood in Utrecht

ĂnĂn is open for lunch and dinner, seven days a week. You can always walk in and try your luck, but it is recommended to book as it can get quite busy.

Australian Vibes in Utrecht: Surfbar De Rode Vosch

Australian restaurant de Rode Vosch (the Red Fox) has been an Australian hotspot in Utrecht city for almost two years. This last weekend they opened a cool surfbar in their restaurant. If Australia is one step too far away, but you do want to have a taste of Australian culture, this is the place to be!

The Australian restaurant is known for its nice Aussie vibe and delicious Australian meals. They serve a variety of small dishes, so you can taste and share dishes during the evening. Sharing is caring is their credo.

There is good news for TimTam lovers

The Australian kitchen has many elements of different cultures. The restaurant calls their kitchen Mod Oz, modern Australian. You can order smoked salmon, chicken parma, bangers & mash, watermelon salad, haloumi cheesy fries and spicy shrimps. But their most special dishes are the kangaroo sashimi and the kangaroo loin. Talking about exotic! And there is good news for TimTam lovers: they serve a nice cheesecake with these traditional Australian chocolate cookies as dessert.

cocktail

Since the Australian culture is all about surfing, the people from De Rode Vosch decided to open a surfbar inside the restaurant. There are surfboards on the walls and the place is decorated with typical Australian touches like boomerangs, a didgeridoo and koalas. The ambience is really laid-back and it’s a nice place to enjoy Australian booze and various cocktails. They serve many Australian wines and 10 (!) different Australian beers. If you want to drink cocktails with friends, you can order a nice pitcher full of cocktail goodness. How about a pitcher of Mojito, Gin Fizz or Blue Lagoon? If you go there on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday night between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. you can get 2 cocktails for the price of one!

SNCKBR IV Utrecht, The largest vegan restaurant of Europe

Vegan food is hot hot hot! Everywhere you look, a new vegan restaurant pops up in Holland. We already wrote about the Vegan Junk Food Barand some secret vegan spots in Amsterdam. But there’s now also a new vegan restaurant in Utrecht, which is the biggest plant based restaurant in Europe: SNCKBR IV.

SNCKBR
SNCKBR already has three other restaurants in the Netherlands, two in Amsterdam and one in Eindhoven. But the one in Utrecht is very special, mainly because it is 100% vegan ánd has 110 seats which makes it the biggest vegan restaurant in the whole of Europe. So it’s 100% VGN and 0% BULLSHIT, to use their own words. The place is a perfect hotspot for people who like both guilty pleasures as well as healthy and cruelty free food and snacks. The name might suggest a snackbar kind of place, but that’s not the case at all. They serve all kinds of international classics like Chinese bao buns, Indian curry, but also Dutch kapsalon and various pizza’s. Everything is cruelty free, so you don’t have to feel guilty. Even the interior is 100% vegan and the clothes of the staff are fair-trade.

100% VGN, 0% BLLSHT

Delicious vegan bites and dishes
I have to admit: I think I have never eaten vegan before. Shame on me, I know…Every time I’ve eaten a vegetarian dinner, it was topped with cheese, cream or eggs. I am curious about vegan food, but never cooked something for myself nor did I try it in a restaurant before. You can imagine my excitement when I got invited to the press dinner in the new SNCKBR. I really had no idea what to expect.

SNCKBR Utrecht Avo Toast
Avo special on toast anyone?

SNCKBR Utrecht 2

The restaurant arranged a six course menu for us so we would be able to taste a variety of nice dishes. We started off with Gyozas, made with spiced tofu, shiitake, leek and peanuts. Then we got the Peking Luck which were thin pancakes we could fill with soy protein, spring onion, cucumber and plum sauce. The protein really tasted like duck, which was very surprising. My favorite dish was the third one, the Bao Bun with eggplant, panko zucchini, mayo and cucumber. It was very crunchy and tasteful. And it didn’t stop there!

SNCKBR Utrecht food

We also had the delicious Mushroom Wellington, which tasted much like beef Wellington, but without the meat. And we had two small burgers, one made of chickpeas, miso and chestnut mushrooms and one which was filled with mushrooms, seaweed, beetroot and soy protein. We finished with a tasteful Chocolate Ganesha made of chocolate, dates, mixed nuts and custard together with a scoop of rice ice cream.

Vegan desert SNCKRBR

Wow, who knew vegan food tasted so good! I really liked it and I am definitely going to check them out another time to try something else from their big menu. SNCKBR’s menu changes every few weeks so make sure you check them out regularly. They have many delicious recipes coming up!

The Streetfood Club » a new colorful hotspot in Utrecht!

Ladies and gentlemen, there’s a new club in town. The Streetfood Club is the place to go to if you want to enjoy various yummy streetfood and cocktails, and I haven’t even started about the interior.

This place because interior is a dream for any Instagrammer

The Streetfood Club is located at the Janskerkhof in Utrecht and the food is mostly inspired by the Asian and South-American cuisine. You’ll be amazed from the moment when you set foot in this place because interior is a dream for any Instagrammer. Inside the club are three different areas. The first one is completely covered in pink. Pink chairs, pink tables and even the walls are pink. The second and third spaces are covered with tropical wallpaper, cozy chairs (with crazy prints), neon lights, flowers and many other nice decorations. The second space also has a big traditional glass ceiling, which gives a nice vibe to the place.

All Day Brunch
The club is of course not only a place to look at, but also for enjoying an international dinner with a variety of flavours. They offer a wide variety of streetfood, ranging from crispy prawn balls to gado gado and from fresh spring rolls to beef curry. They also serve dim sum, many salads, kitsune udon, gyoza ravioli, crab cakes and oysters. The portions are small, but each dish is high-quality and tastes delicious. Each dish has its own unique, special flavor and it’s quite hard to stop ordering more. Four or five dishes per person will be enough to make you fulfilled. I personally loved the seabass ceviche, the crispy prawn balls and the sweet potato fries. If you can’t make a decision between all the tasty dishes, don’t worry! You can order a surprise menu and they will serve you a selection of their favorite dishes.

Seabass ceviche

But…it doesn’t end here! You can go to The Streetfood Club for an amazing brunch from 10 AM till 4 PM. If you have a sweet tooth, you can order a donut with ice-cream, French toast with maple syrup, matcha pancakes with chocolate glaze and honeyed pistachios or kimchi waffles with fried chicken and maple syrup. They also serve a variety of luxurious sandwiches, truffled eggs, pokébowls and salads.

How about a Hello Kitty Cotton Candy Milkshake?

Cocktails
The Streetfood Club doesn’t only serve streetfood, they also have a nice variety of “special” cocktails. How about a Hello Kitty Cotton Candy Milkshake with rose extract, lime juice and cotton candy? Or a Silk Road with vodka, kumquat and pomegranate juice? If you are in the mood for a milkshake kinda cocktail, then go for the Hazelnut Heaven spiked with ice-cream, chocolate chip cookies and Baileys. The cocktails are not standard at all and they are all made of a special mix. The best thing about the cocktails is that the people at the Streetfood Club create their own spirits, liqueurs and syrups. And if you’re not in the mood for alcohol, you can enjoy a Kingston Town drink with pineapple juice and rose water, a Prince Harry of England iced tea with ginger and mint or a freaky milkshake.

The Streetfood Club Cocktials

Yes, this is going to be THE place to be in Utrecht, with people all over the country coming over to check it out.

The Streetfood Club is having their try-outs nights until the 6th of April for people who want to get to know the menu. Check their Facebook Page for more info.

Sanju Ramen, the finest Japanese broth in Utrecht

Sanju Ramen is all about the Japanese broth that is getting more popular by the day. They opened back in January 2018 at the up-and-coming Voorstraat in Utrecht, and serve typical Japanese soul food. Co-owner, (and ramen lover) Jeroen invited me to the restaurant and told me all I needed to know about Japanese ramen.

Sanju Ramen
Sanju Ramen

The broth is cooked for approximately 8 whole hours

Japanese Broth
Ramen is Japanese noodle soup based on chicken, pork or vegetarian broth. This bouillon will be cooked for approximately 8 (!) whole hours to create a juicy and tasty soup. It is thus quite a lengthy process to create one cup of ramen. The ramen soup is full of flavor because it has been cooking for so many hours. It tastes very salty and it’s seasoned with many different spices. Jeroen told me that Japanese people eat ramen almost every day. In the open kitchen you can find many Japanese chefs who have been living in the Netherlands for a few years and who know everything to make the delicious, traditional Japanese ramen.

Sanju Ramen

The Menu
You can get all kinds of ramen at Sanju Ramen, try the Hot & Spicy with chicken and roasted jalapeno peppers, or the Pork Miso Tonkotsu with pork (hence the name), creamy broth, corn and green onion or go for the Sanju Classic with homemade miso, chicken, corn, onion and nori flakes. It was the first time I’ve eaten ramen and I ordered the Pork Miso Tonkotsu, which was delicious, creamy and really tasty with nice, tender pork meat. Sanju also serves vegetarian and vegan options on the menu, something you see more often, even in Asian style restaurants. This is quite unique since the traditional ramen are most of the time made with either chicken or pork. It takes two whole days to make the vegetarian or vegan soup. At Sanju Ramenyou can also order baked dumplings, deep fried chicken or edamame as side dishes for the full Japanese experience.

If you like your ramen, slurp loudly so the chefs in the open kitchen can hear you enjoying your dinner!

Merel

Katfé, the first Cat Café in Utrecht will open soon!

Cat lovers around the world listen up! After the success in Amsterdam and other cities around the world, Utrecht is finally coming with a “Cat Café” named Katfé.

After a crowdfunding process and help from 65 volunteers around the neighbourhood, they have finally managed to find the right location and the construction has started. Katfé will be located where the old Wibra store used to be, in the Amsterdamsestraatweg in Utrecht.

Cuddling with Cats
Katfé is going to be a place where you can enjoy a coffee or a small bite while you can cuddle with several cats from all shapes and breeds. Don’t be mistaken, it’s not the place to bring your own cat, but to enjoy the company of others. There are many cats on the streets of Utrecht that love to sneak into different café’s and bars, which is not always the best place for them to hide or relax. The Katfé will be the perfect sollution for this problem and the cats will have a safe and especially designed area for them to play and relax.

Cat café, Katfé in Utrecht

Jelmer Bergsma en Stephanie van Hovell came up with the idea a few years ago and believe that cats can bring cat lovers together. “It’s also the perfect place for those that can’t keep a cat in their own home, for whatever reason”.

Katfé is planning to open the doors early Juli 2018, Miawow!

More Utrecht? Check out this recently opened hotspot!

Hotspot: De Utrechtse Boekenbar

Close to the lively Ledig Erf in Utrecht is a new coffee bar/bookshop; De Utrechtse Boekenbar. It’s a shop where you can buy interesting books and drink a cup of coffee while reading your new book purchase.

Founder Tim van den Hoed started a crowdfunding campaign to make his dream Book-Bar become a reality. Because he’s born and raised in Utrecht, he felt like this was the city where he wanted to open the Boekenbar. Utrecht is also a cultural city with many music, art and book projects. Van den Hoed wanted to create a space with ambiance where both the coffee and the book assortment were good. De Utrechtse Boekenbar is quite unique because of the combination of interesting and special books and the possibility to have a drink at the same place. You can come here for novels, travel books, cookbooks and table photo books. All are displayed with the front faced forward.

Utrechtse boekenbar

More than just a bookstore
The Utrechtse Boekenbar is a place for everyone. You can meet up with friends but the bar is also suitable for studying. The shop is sleek, with a comfortable sitting area and a wide range of books and a simple café. Books are both available in English and Dutch and the assortment is not very standard as you may expect. Your attention is immediately drawn to all the fascinating book covers that are placed around the store.

Koffie bij de Utrechtse Boekenbar
And yes, they serve good coffee at the Utrechtse Boekenbar!

You can also buy a variety of stationary items and at the bar you can enjoy a coffee, ice tea and (homemade!) cookies and pies. Tim is at the shop six days a week and pretty much runs the shop on his own. But he’ll always goes out of his way to have a small conversation about the store, and give you the best book recommendations! So if you’re searching for a new book and combine this with a nice cup of coffee, go to De Utrechtse Boekenbar!
