11x RESTAURANTS IN UTRECHT THAT OFFER FOOD DELIVERY

Your favourite local businesses need your help. And you need to eat. Let’s help each other!

Here are some local restaurants in Utrecht that deliver food at your doorstep. Bon appetit!

FIG

The concept is innovative: gym and restaurant in one. While we really miss their workout sessions, we thankfully don’t have to miss their tasty meals. As of now, FIG offers a dinner rotation with a “dish of the day” to be ordered by 2pm. Add any sides, desserts or drinks from their menu and enjoy it at home. I am impatiently waiting for shakshuka day to be back!

Punk Pizza

Punk Pizza is not only delicious and out-of-the-box pizzas, but they are currently paying it forward by donating 1 euro per pizza ordered to Utrecht’s cultural scene. Cultural establishments and artists are currently facing unprecedented hardship, and if eating pizza can contribute to the cause even so slightly, sign me up.

Gys

Gys is 100% organic and focuses on vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options (yet they have meat dishes too). It’s a perfect healthy choice that has options for anyone quarantined with you. Who wouldn’t want vegetarian kapsalon made healthy for some guilt-free junk food?

Waku Waku

If you are living by a plant-based diet, you sure are not forgotten. Waku Waku ’s popular restaurant on Vredenburg might be temporarily closed but they will bring the goods to you. Pizza, burgers, noodles, salads; all the delicious soul-food made vegan.

Waku Waku Utrecht

ANAN

ANANs Vietnamese food is my go-to for fresh, tangy, bold flavours. Perfect to bring a little variety to your dinner routine. This Asian restaurant in Utrecht offers a wide selection of Vietnamese staples, with plenty of options to cater for vegetarians, vegans, meat-eaters and everyone in between.

Dogma

What about a HOT DOG? Dogma is all about hotdogs in all sorts of funky variations. Mexican toppings, sauerkraut, Japanese-insipred, with a side of truffle fries? Swap any dog of a plant-based sausage or go for a gluten-free bun; mix and match to fit your wildest hot dog dreams.

Spice Monkey

Spice Monkey is a new-comer on the Utrecht restaurant scene, and an unlucky one when it comes to timing. But we all love trying out new places and discovering new menus, don’t we? This is the perfect occasion to explore the emerging culinary scene of Utrecht. Go check out that spicy Bali-inspired goodness and tell us how you like it.

Brunch by Teds

Make your weekends feel special still with some tasty brunch. Teds is one of Utrecht’s busiest spots for brunch, and for once, no need to wait for a table. Order from Teds extensive brunch menu – eggs benedict, granola, pancakes, you name it – and keep weekends feeling like weekends.

Brunch Utrecht delivery

KEEK

Cakes and other sweet deliciousness freshly baked and brought to your door! On days like these, I believe we all deserve to spend some quality one-on-one time with a slice of chocolate tart, a glossy cinnamon bun, or a hearty bowl of soup (they do lunch too). Treat your soul with some KEEK.

Cakes delivered Utrecht

Roberto Gelato

Let’s end with a bit of a wild card. I have been introduced to Roberto Gelato a few months back as the best ice cream in town by an Italian friend (so she knows her gelato). Sadly they then stopped selling gelato for the winter months. But to my delight (and my friend’s) they are now open for business and will bring that iced creamy heaven to you.

Meneer Potter and NODA open their doors in the Neude Library

Located at ’t Neude in the former Post Office, Utrecht’s newest hotspots has opened the city café Meneer Potter and the food bar and deli NODA.

Meneer Potter and NODA may be located in the same building, but both have a unique and unique character.

Meneer Potter

You will find genuine Utrecht conviviality and a healthy dose of positivity at the Meneer Potter city café. This homely café has open its doors on the 13th of March on the ground floor of the library. A place where all of Utrecht meets. Mister Potter is the neighbour who is always ready with a cup of coffee and a fresh newspaper, who is always up for a short chat and ensures familiar conviviality. From early in the morning until evening, for big, small, student or retired.  Hungry peeps walk in for a sandwich and groups of friends finish the day with a drink and some Spanish pinxtos. The hasty “Utrechter” is also at the right address when it comes to coffee, after all, a coffee to-go is easily made. Meneer Potter is the caretaker of the city and gives the feeling of coming home. Where time passes without realising it.

Studying suddenly becomes a lot more attractive while enjoying a nourishing breakfast and a shot of caffeine.

Meneer Potter Utrecht

NODA

NODA is the beating heart of the library and is located on the second floor of the building. In the middle of the library – surrounded by wise words – you can enjoy the international atmosphere and an amazing view of the Oudegracht all day long. NODA represents an eclectic mix of colours, scents and textures. A nice reference to the diversity of cultures within Utrecht. And that is also clearly reflected on the menu. The extensive menu consists of small worldly dishes that are ideal for sharing. From a lamb tagine to a steaming bowl of Thai tom kha kai, spicy Old Canal Cheese and an Okonomiyaki from Japan – all continents come by. The deli’s sandwiches, wraps and smoothies are ideal for people on the go. NODA has its own entrance on the Oudegracht and will happily continue when the library stops.

Mr Black and the White Ox | Utrecht’s new 2-in-1 culinary escapade

Some days you just want to amp up the volume and treat yourself to something a little nicer, or a lot nicer. Cue in Utrecht’s newcomer; Mr Black and the White Ox. Located a little outside of Utrecht’s buzzing city center in Douwe Egberts’ old headquarter building, this new hotspot is the little culinary escapade we are all craving.

Mr Black and the White Ox

Away from the slightly pretentious, hip new places popping up (no shade, some days all we want is an instagramable stack of pancakes), Mr Black and the White Ox decided they were gonna show us how it should be done and brought their A-game. Whether you feel into top-notch lunch without breaking the bank or want to go all in with a night of fine dining, Utrecht’s new two-in-one venue plays in both courts.

mr black and the white ox

Mr Black and the White Ox

Lunch at Mr Black
By day, Mr Black is charge or the kitchen. The menu offers a selection of brunch-y items; from the traditional egg dishes, soups, salads and burgers to other worldly delicacies such as carpaccio, shakshuka, burrata and other worldly delicacies. Now whatever you are picturing? Kick it up a notch both in terms of flavors and presentation–I mean have you ever seen or tasted balsamico spheres? In our humble opinion, this is pretty much as good as it gets at this price point (around 10-15€ per dish, and they are rather filling). In a nutshell; Mr Black is ticking our boxes: delicious, eye-pleasing, affordable, and very important in my case, very vegetarian-friendly.

Cocktails!
Did I hear cocktails? Those are a selling point in my books, and Mr Black and the White Ox delivered in style. I am not just talking basics, although the wine collection is very impressive and a true step-up from your every-bar offering–I’m talking funky, out-of-the-box cocktails. We let ourselves be tempted by an Elderflower Spritz and what I believe was called ‘Call Me Honey’, and as far creativity and taste go, those were a home run.

We agree with Mr Black and the White Ox

Fine dining at the White Ox
Dinner time? The White Ox is taking over, and he’s here to impress. The White Ox side of the venue is only open Thursday to Sunday for dinner and requires reservation (see information below). It is a carefully crafted fine dining experience, including a wine pairing add-on for those who want to take advantage of the serious wine expertise of the hosts (there is even a ‘wine room’ at the back of the dinner hall, which also happens to be rentable). Guests can join in for a 3-, 4- or 5-course menu, ranging €34-46 p.p. (add €18-32 for wine pairing), in an intimate, elegant, retro-inspired decor.

Mr Black and the White Ox

If, as you should, you are curious to pay either Mr Black or The White Ox a visit, let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Hungrily yours,

Mathilde

Piero’s » Utrecht’s new retro Italian bar-restaurant

There’s a new Italian kid in town, and Piero’s means serious delicious business. From neapolitan pizzas, to fresh pasta and traditional tiramisu to finish it off, Piero’s Italian celebrates the flavors of Italy in ways that’ll keep you going back for more…and more.

Located on Ledig Erf, Piero’s resto-bar adopts a warm, retro-chic yet unpretentious decor and aims, through both its vibe and menu, for no-frills simplicity. Piero’s isn’t the place to go for if you are looking for out of the box, wheel-reinventing cuisine. Piero’s is where you go for a packful of flavor, authentic and soul-pleasing plate of Italian goodness.

On the menu, a selection of various antipasti gets you ready for the real piece de resistance.

Let’s talk pasta
Pasta is such a staple in most people’s home cooking rotating menu that a restaurant needs to deliver a next-level pasta experience. Mamma mia, Piero’s pastas are out of this world. And what’s more? You can keep going back and be continuously surprised with their “filled pasta of the day”; these pillowy fresh flavor bombs are everything pasta should be.

In the mood for pizza?
Once again, Piero’s strategy is less is more, and it pays off. No funky flavors here, we’re going simple and traditional, so the flavors have to be bang on, with nowhere to hide. The best part? Neapolitan-style crust: a light, fluffy, melts-in-your-mouth dream. Some can even be made vegan upon request, so no one will be left out of that pizza fest.

Italian food

Finally, the usual rule applies: there is always room for dessert. Try their signature tiramisu, or let yourself be tempted by their other treats. Our favorite? The torta al cioccolato e balsamico. This decadent chocolate tart can only be described as addictive Nutella-y pie, and we just never wanted it to end.

In short? Want to impress a date or just get some sunny Italian goodness in you, Piero’s is your new go to. We haven’t tried everything on the menu (yet 😉), so make sure to let us know what to order next time we go!

Bacio,

Mathilde

There is a JEU de Boules Bar in Utrecht and it’s awesome!

With its bites, boules and beers, JEU De Boules bar is the latest hot spot to hit Utrecht. If you are looking to unwind, catch up with friends and enjoy a drink or dinner, then you have come to the right place.

The set-up is super cool with 11 boules courts, tables scattered around the edges and a top-notch bar. The whole place is made from wood and reminds me of a trendy bowling club – which is not surprising, the current generation have turned the age-old game of boules into a hip sport.

Jeu de boules bar utrecht
Game ON!

A bucket of icy beers is one of JEU’s specialities and can be enjoyed at the lanes while playing a game. Boules is always played in two teams and can be played with 2, 4 or 6 players but don’t worry, each lane as instructions for those who are not familiar with the game. Each game goes for fifty minutes and it is highly recommended to book in advance as the lanes get booked out quickly. My team won, 13 – 5 (winning!)

As we are playing, the Plank De Petanque arrives for us to nibble on, which is a plank packed with hot and cold snacks and it looks awesome! The board is filled with various cheese’s, bitterballen, nachos, bread, meats, onion rings, nuts and olives. It is perfect for sharing and we snack while we play.

If you are still feeling peckish after the game, you can order a couple of JEU hot dogs – the Hotdog A La Francaise with mustard, ketchup and sauerkraut and the same hot dog but with a vegetarian dog. They come out on classic checkered napkins and really hit the spot.

JEU is located on the ground floor of parking garage Paardenveld and just next to ROOST aan de singel. We will definitely be going back for another game!

Instock Saves Dinners

Restaurant Instock is the one place where you can combine yumminess with doing a good deed. We can tell you, rescued food never tasted so good!

Restaurant Instock in a nutshell
Did you know one third of the whole food production is wasted? Hold on, that means a worldwide wastage of 1.3 billion tonnes per year. Instock is a place that comes to the rescue with her various locations (Amsterdam, Utrecht and The Hague) They want to break the food waste cycle by turning food surplus into an appetising breakfast, lunch and dinner. Think of fruits and veggies with some beauty flaws, one-day old bread, and fish and meat leftovers. A couple of years ago they started a collaboration with the biggest Dutch supermarket; Albert Heijn. But restaurant Instock does not only pick up unsold products at these grocery stores, but also at other local producers. Since the start they’ve saved over 607924 kilos, and the ‘rescue food ball’ keeps on rolling.

IF WE STOP WASTING FOOD, IT WOULD BE THE EQUIVALENT OF TAKING 1 OUT OF 4 CARS OFF THE ROAD.

Culinary, circular menu
The ambiance of Instock feels relaxed, it’s like coming home. Where the menu normally constantly changes, they have found a way to create a festive set menu. And if possible even circular! By analysing what kind of leftovers they mostly receive, they were able to see some ‘food trends’. With these in mind they have assembled the special dinner menu inspired by the Italian cuisine. For example, if there are tomatoes on the recipe, it’s no big deal for the chef if it’s a cherry or a beef tomato. Expect a four course menu with Italian classics in Instock’s own way.

We kicked off with a minestrone soup (one of my faves during winter days), followed by the cod tartare di merluzzo. Course number three was homemade gnocchi with smoked ricotta and some Bolognese on the side (absolutely delicious). Our final round consisted of a pre-dessert (you will be surprised) and the dulce the leche parfait. In case you’ve got a food allergy or special diet wishes, don’t worry. Even though the kitchen staff has to deal with what’s ‘in stock’, they’re really creative in coming up with allergy and diet friendly alternatives. So, something for everyone. An ode to the crew!

ĂnĂn Saigon » Vietnamese Streetfood in Utrecht

Walking into ĂnĂn, you are instantly hit with the smells and colours of a busy side street in Saigon… or in Utrecht! The vibe is alive and the place is dotted with wait staff running between tables and the kitchen carrying steaming little plates of mouth-watering Vietnamese treats.

On top of the tables are typical of what you would find in a local Vietnamese eatery – colourful plastic trays filled with sauces, chop sticks and napkins. The chairs are also in style – bamboo. We are told that AnAn in Vietnamese means ‘eat eat’. Yes please.

ĂnĂn Utrecht

ĂnĂn literally means Eat Eat

The menu is impressive with so much to choose from. The small dishes are designed to share (something all Asians like to do) and 2 to 4 dishes are equal to a full meal. And let’s all put our hands together for their extensive choice of vegetarian and vegan dishes too.

Asian Beers
Asian beers at ĂnĂn

ĂnĂn Vietnamese Streetfood

The food starts to come out and it smells amazing. The vegetables are fresh and the broths and sauces are salty and sweet, leaving a warm feeling in the throat. They have a selection of ‘Banh Hoi’ – roll it yourself dishes. The ingredients are crunchy and when put together, the aroma and taste of that first bite are so good. The great thing about Vietnamese cuisine (besides the prices) is that because the dishes are so light, there is always room to sample more. The duck curry is a power house and rocks our taste buds, as is the udon dumpling soup with vegetables.

ĂnĂn Saigon » Vietnamese Streetfood in Utrecht

ĂnĂn is open for lunch and dinner, seven days a week. You can always walk in and try your luck, but it is recommended to book as it can get quite busy.

Australian Vibes in Utrecht: Surfbar De Rode Vosch

Australian restaurant de Rode Vosch (the Red Fox) has been an Australian hotspot in Utrecht city for almost two years. This last weekend they opened a cool surfbar in their restaurant. If Australia is one step too far away, but you do want to have a taste of Australian culture, this is the place to be!

The Australian restaurant is known for its nice Aussie vibe and delicious Australian meals. They serve a variety of small dishes, so you can taste and share dishes during the evening. Sharing is caring is their credo.

There is good news for TimTam lovers

The Australian kitchen has many elements of different cultures. The restaurant calls their kitchen Mod Oz, modern Australian. You can order smoked salmon, chicken parma, bangers & mash, watermelon salad, haloumi cheesy fries and spicy shrimps. But their most special dishes are the kangaroo sashimi and the kangaroo loin. Talking about exotic! And there is good news for TimTam lovers: they serve a nice cheesecake with these traditional Australian chocolate cookies as dessert.

cocktail

Since the Australian culture is all about surfing, the people from De Rode Vosch decided to open a surfbar inside the restaurant. There are surfboards on the walls and the place is decorated with typical Australian touches like boomerangs, a didgeridoo and koalas. The ambience is really laid-back and it’s a nice place to enjoy Australian booze and various cocktails. They serve many Australian wines and 10 (!) different Australian beers. If you want to drink cocktails with friends, you can order a nice pitcher full of cocktail goodness. How about a pitcher of Mojito, Gin Fizz or Blue Lagoon? If you go there on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday night between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. you can get 2 cocktails for the price of one!
