From clifftop walks to cozy English stays, this is the kind of road trip that really surprised us. Ready to explore the best of Devon’s coast? Let’s dive into the route, the highlights, and all the hidden gems we found along the way.
How to get to South West England
First things first; how do you get to South West England? From the Netherlands it’s never been easier. KLM now flies directly into Exeter within one hour. Because the airport of Exeter is so small, you are in and out in no time. If you want you can also travel by train, you could but it will take you about 8 hours with a change in London.
Topsham – by the river Exe
The first village we’re going to highlight is Topsham. Located by the river exe, this town has a laidback vibe, and has some nice restaurants and spots. Topsham used to be an important little port back in the 1900’s, when it was used for trading with Europe and the America’s. It explains some of the Dutch facades alongside the river, as bricks and tiles were traded with the Dutch during this period. Walking around this town is lovely, but Topsham isn’t large, so here are the best things to do here:
Where should you stay in Topsham?
You have two good options in Topsham. The Globe offers a comfy B&B vibe with 22 rooms, and has a pub on the ground floor, where you can also enjoy a good Sunday Roast. If you seek a more luxury stay, try the Salutation Inn.
Eat at:
You don’t have to walk far, The Salutation offers one of the best fish menu’s in the region, and it’s the best restaurant in Topsham. Feast on fresh oysters, daily fish specials and local wines. salutationtopsham.co.uk
Where to Drink Coffee in Topsham:
Although Topsham doesn’t have an overwhelming number of coffee bars, the few that exist are truly worth visiting. Start your day at Circle, a charming café located on the main street. Filled with greenery, pet-friendly vibes, and a handful of outdoor seats, it’s easily one of the best coffee spots in town. Next, make your way to the Boathouse. While we didn’t try their coffee personally, glowing online reviews suggest it’s a solid choice. Plus, their fresh crêpes and baguettes make it a great place for a light bite.
Where to Wander in Topsham:
For those who love a scenic stroll, head out early and explore the Exe Estuary Trail. This peaceful riverside route guides you through the countryside towards Exton, and even all the way to Exmouth if you’re feeling active. Along the way, you’ll pass tranquil birdwatching spots, benches by the River Exe, and idyllic farmland views. It’s a beautiful way to experience Devon on foot.
Top Place to Visit in Topsham:
No visit to Topsham is complete without stopping by Darts Farm. This local favorite is more than just a farm shop — it’s a full experience. Browse their gourmet local produce, relax at the café, or enjoy a meal in the on-site restaurant. There’s even a spa and an ice cream stand to round off your visit. If you love wine, you must book a wine-tasting tour in their vineyard – Pebblebed Vineyard.
Exmouth – Charming Coastal Gem
Located right at the mouth of the river Exe, this town is popular with tourists, but also locals. It has over 2 miles of sandy beaches, so no wonder it’s a popular spot for sunseekers. Let’s see what you can do around here.
Where to eat in Exmouth?
The answer is fairly simple; River Exe Café. A little sidenote though, you need to book well ahead in order to eat at this unique restaurant. Unique because it’s the only floating restaurant in England, and only open from April until September. To get there you must book online first, then take a boat that will take you to the restaurant in about ten minutes. Meanwhile you can enjoy the fresh breeze, while looking at the beaches and hills of Exmouth. They serve local seafood, meat from Darts Farm, and wonderful cocktails. riverexecafe.com
Sidmouth – Coastal walks
One thing you cannot miss in Southwest England, is Sidmouth and its incredible coastal walk you can start here. Sidmouth has a long stretched beach, but also a lively center with plenty of shops and cafes. Here’s what to do.
Stay or visit:
If you can (and you must), visit the Pig Hotel – at Combe. This 17th Century estate lies between the hills of Exeter, in Devon. With a farm to table concept, you can expect local produced food – including vegetables and herbs from their incredible historical garden.
It’s not often that we felt so in love with a place. There is something special about these grounds; its people, their dining room full of herbs, or the fireplace that is always cracking. This Hotel is located just 15 minutes from the coast in Devon, making it the ultimate countryside escape in England. There are 9 more Pigs around the UK – each one unique and wonderful.
Larkbeare Grange
If you want to experience a wonderful English Bed & Breakfast, we tip you Larkbeare Grange. Run by a lovely couple that will make you feel at home. From here you can easily explore the surrounding villages. larkbeare.net
Walking the Southwest Coast Path
Although the Southwest Coast Path runs for 630 miles, Sidmouth is a great way to start from. If you start your hike here, you can walk all the way up to Budleigh Salterton, a coastal town that is about a 3 hour walk away. On the way you walk past the incredible Jurassic Coast, forests, hills and beaches. It was one of the best hikes we’ve done in Europe. A few tips:
- The first 20 minutes or so are the most challenging. After that, the hike is fairly easy and flat.
- Your first toilet stop will be located at the Ladram Bay Holiday Park which you will pass, so make sure you use it. You can also buy some food and drinks here.
- If you arrive at Budleigh Salterton before 5pm, make sure to stop at Rockfish for lunch or drinks. This restaurant is known for it’s sustainable message – meaning that they work with local partners and they promote shellfish as much as possible. therockfish.co.uk
