UTRECHT | THE FULL TRAVEL GUIDE

Utrecht offers the charming vibe of Amsterdam, but without the crowds. With its historic city center including charming canals, cobbled streets and an amazing food scene, Utrecht is one of the country’s best kept secrets. We were born here, studied here, spent our younger years here. It’s safe to say we know all the best spots! Here’s the full travel guide to Utrecht and surroundings.

Utrecht city

Why visit Utrecht?

Because it offers the perfect blend of history, culture, and local charm – all within a walkable city center. We’ve been living in Utrecht for over 20 years, and although Elke and Sarah have left, our editor Eline still lives there. She might be a bit biased because she lives in Utrecht, but we can honestly say it is one the best cities in The Netherlands. From climbing the tallest church tower in the Netherlands (the Dom Tower) to relaxing along unique canals with waterside terraces or visit one of the many museums, Utrecht gives you an authentic Dutch experience without the tourist crowds. Utrecht is however, gaining popularity and being discovered by tourists, so don’t wait and visit now!

Getting to Utrecht and getting around

Because it’s convenient location in the middle of The Netherlands, Utrecht is very well-connected from anywhere of the country. In fact, it’s home to the largest and busiest train station in the Netherlands! Although Utrecht does not have an airport itself, if you’re flying to Amsterdam, it is only a 30-minute train ride away from Schiphol Airport. Utrecht is also well-connected to other airports in the country by train, such as Eindhoven or Rotterdam. Once you’re in Utrecht, it is easy to get around: the city center is best explored by foot or by bike. If you wish to explore further areas public transport (bus and tram) is also very easy to use.

Best things to do in Utrecht

Whether you’re in town for a day or a week, there’s plenty to keep you busy. From must-see landmarks to local favorites, here’s a selection of the top things to see, try, and experience while you’re in Utrecht.

Climb the Dom Tower (and discover DOMunder!)

The number one thing to do in Utrecht, is to climb the tallest church tower of The Netherland: the Dom Tower. The Dom Tower has been restored over the past five (!) years and, since the end of 2024, can once again be admired in all its glory. The 465 steps reward you with a stunning panoramic view over the city and surrounding countryside. But don’t forget to visit DOMunder: an underground archaeological museum that takes visitors beneath the Dom Square to explore 2,000 years of history, from Roman times to the present.

Visit the Dom Church and Other Historic Churches

Right next to the Dom Tower, on the Dom Square, is the impressive Dom Church (Domkerk), a beautiful Gothic building. Other notable churches in Utrecht well worth a visit include the Janskerk, Pieterskerk, and St. Willibrordkerk, each offering a glimpse into Utrecht’s historic and religious heritage.

Discover Hidden Courtyards (‘Hofjes’)

The center of Utrecht is filled with little ‘hofjes’: small, tucked away courtyards and gardens that offer peaceful retreats amidst the bustling city center. To give you a few examples: don’t miss Flora’s Hof, Pandhof van de Dom, and Pandhof Sinte Marie. But don’t forget to go explore and discover some more ‘hofjes’ yourself. How many can you find?

Stroll Along Utrecht’s Unique Canals

Everybody’s favorite activity: a stroll along the Utrecht canals. Utrecht’s canals are unlike any other in the Netherlands. The canals include two-level of wharves with cellar cafés, boutiques, and terraces. You can walk or sit right at the water side, whether you have your take away coffee with you or you’re enjoying a nice meal on a terrace. The canals offer a perfect way to take in the city’s charm. Tip: get there early, before the shops open, to avoid the crowds!

Walk Around the Singel

If you’re not done strolling after exploring the canals in the city center, take a relaxed walk along the Singel — the circular canal that wraps around the heart of Utrecht. The full loop is about 5 to 6 kilometers. Just follow the water along a lush, green path. It’s probably my favorite thing to do in the city: perfect for getting in your 10k steps, and thanks to all the greenery, it hardly feels like you’re in the middle of a city at all.

Explore Museums

If you like to visit a museum, Utrecht offers plenty of choice. Here are some of the fascinating museums:

  • Centraal Museum – The main art museum in the city. It offers a big collection of art and has the largest collection of Rietveld (who called Utrecht his home!) pieces in the world.
  • Museum Speelklok – You probably have already seen big street organs playing on the streets of Utrecht. There is actually a museum dedicated to self-playing musical instruments! Very fun museum, also for children.
  • Railway Museum (Spoorwegmuseum) A very large and beautiful museum all about trains. Since Utrecht is home to the biggest railway station of the country, it’s a fitting tribute to the Netherlands’ rich rail history. And trust me: it is a museum fun for all ages! You can spend at least half a day here.
  • University Museum – A research museum all about science and discovery. Step inside and start researching and experimenting. Every weekend and during school holidays, special activities are organized for children 8-14 years old!
  • Rietveld Schröder House – A house built by the famous De Stijl architect Gerrit Rietveld in 1924 which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Go Shopping in Utrecht

From small boutiques in the city center to the big and modern Hoog Catharijne shopping mall, Utrecht offers a great mix of unique finds and familiar brands. There are many charming and unique local shops tucked into side streets for handmade goods, books, and vintage fashion, but also many big brands have a shop here. Some unique and personal favorite shops of mine:

  • Broese Booksellers – If you like books, this shop is must-visit. This enormous building offers any book you can think of, including a wide range of English books. There is also a small cafe inside to enjoy a book with a cup of coffee with a view on the canal.
  • Lit. English Bookshop – This shop has recently opened, but is already very popular. It is cute store offering many English books and very helpful staff!
  • Game shop Subcultures – If you’re into board games, you’ll be in heaven here. This shop has just about every game you can think of, and simply browsing the shelves is a fun experience on its own.
  • Beadies – Feeling creative? Come make your own jewelry. Here you can buy the cutest beads and accessoires for you DIY-jewelry!
  • Minre – A hip, trendy clothing shop for women in a cute boutique.

Relax in Parks and Green Spaces

Utrecht has no shortage of green oases. Want to get away from the streets and buildings and enjoy some green? Here are the places to go:

  • Wilhelminapark – Absolutely gorgeous, classic and peaceful park. In my opinion, the most beautiful park in the city. There is also a restaurant with a nice terrace in the middle of the park.
  • Griftpark – A more modern park, including a petting zoo and café.
  • Paardenveld – A lesser-known spot to unwind at the waterfront. When the whether is good, this place is packed with people having a picknick or a drink. It also offers a nice view on the canal and the boats that go by.
  • Amelisweerd – This place is a little bit outside of Utrecht. It is a beautiful estate and forest, perfect for walking or cycling. The river Kromme Rijn also flows through Amelisweerd. Tip: take a break at restaurant De Veldkeuken or tea house Rhijnauwen.
  • Botanic Gardens of Utrecht University – Discover more than 10.000 species of plants on more than 100.000m2. You do need to buy a ticket.

Visit Castles Near Utrecht

Just outside the city, you’ll find impressive castles worth the short trip. Kasteel de Haar is the largest and most luxurious in the Netherlands, while Slot Zuylen offers a more intimate look at Dutch aristocratic life in a beautiful riverside setting. Did you know you can book a boat tour including lunch over the Vecht!
